Portmeirion, etc.

Has anyone stayed at the Portmeirion Hotel in Wales?
My husband and I drove to Portmeirion many years ago, and when we got into town, we found that everything was closed and there was no place to stay. I would like to give the place another chance, but noticed that there are only a couple hotels in the area. If anyone has advice as to whether or not it is worth staying there or just making it earlier in the day as a stopover, I'd like to hear.

Also, we are looking to stay in Brighton and Canterbury while we are there in August. Any lodging suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks for your suggestions!

When you say -“ we got into town” - I presume you mean Porthmadog?

It sounds like you are at the top end of the market. Note that Portmeirion is a private village that charges day visitors an entry fee. Portmeirion has 2 hotels plus cottages = The Portmeirion Hotel & Castell Deudraeth. I have not stayed in either but they are reputed to be top notch. http://www.portmeirion-village.com/stay/

If you wish to cut costs in this area, try www.travelodge.co.uk who have modern places in Porthmadog (on a business park/no air con) & Caernarfon - with no on site parking.
