plays in London

Going to be in London for 10 days in early April. Any recommendations for plays, NOT Hamilton. Has anyone seen the Tina The Musical - the Tina Turner show?

Plays we've seen:

Book of Mormon
Come From Away
Les Miz
Phantom
Fiddler
Lion King

Thanks much.

Have not seen Tina.

Did see My Name is Lucy Barton but that ends this month. Wanted to see The Cane at The Royal Court but didn’t. Same with Witness for the Prosecution. Never enough time.

Would LOVE to see The Price with David Suchet and Brendon Coyle which ends April 24th AND Dame Maggie Smith In A German’s Life at the Bridge Theatre starting April 4. Believe tickets go on sale next week.

Lots a of good theatre in April. Enjoy.

Claudia thanks so much for the info that MAGGIE SMITH will be on stage in April/May. That coincides with my trip --hurray!

Margaret, I was also going to suggest the Arthur Miller play that Claudia already mentioned. The Tina Turner musical has had good reviews, but the lead actress is leaving in March. I'm planning to see Admissions with Alex Kingston at the Trafalgar Studios theatre. And, now, Maggie.

I saw "Everybody's Talking About Jamie" in November.
I'd never heard of it, but read about it in the inflight magazine on my way to London.
I just walked past the theatre one day, and picked up a ticket for that night.
I absolutely loved it!
It's almost a sort of a cross between "Billy Elliot" and "Kinky Boots".
It's a musical, and the music is great.

@ Claudia, thanks for the heads-up about the play "The Price'. I am a big fan of Suchet particularly as in the role of Agatha Christie's Poirot. And Brendan Coyle I enjoyed as the character Bates in "Downton Abbey".

Also, if you want to see something a bit different and impressive "School of Rock" is amazing, what the kids do is brilliant. Depends what you are looking for, but it certainly makes you think about how talented kids can be. Also, "Woman in black" is brilliant, scarey but super.

Another vote for "Everybody's Talking About Jamie". I LOVED it!

I saw Come From Away on Broadway last year; it was AWESOME! The story is beautiful, the cast was amazing, the staging was innovative. When we left, my sister said "I could go again tomorrow night!"

Hi Margaret -

I’m not sure the ‘open to the elements’ main Globe Theatre will be open in April, but the adjoining Wanamaker Jacobean theatre, although of relatively small capacity, is a delight. Worth checking the Globe Theatre’s website to see what is playing - it’s wonderfully atmospheric and we loved it. We went a couple of years ago and saw a play about the debut of Handel’s ‘Messiah’ which was brilliant. (I forget the plays title, which is remiss of me!).

Hope you find something suitable which you’ll enjoy!

Ian

What about Mousetrap? I have not seen it but know it is a London staple.

Whatever you choose, I recommend picking something that is NOT in the US yet. For me, that would make the performance that much more special. Also, all on your list that you have seen are musicals, not plays.

Are you actually seeking a recommendation for a musical as opposed to a play as you mentioned Tina the Musical and everything you saw were musicals? If you love Tina Turner, to me, that would be a great choice for you. It's also I believe only in London.

Have you seen The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time? It is back in London for a short run and it is excellent.

I also enjoyed Everybody’s Talking About Jamie.

The Mousetap is excellent. If you like Agatha Christie, you will love it.

The Play that Goes Wrong is breathless, and breakneck, slapstick. It has been so popular that it has become a permanent installation in the West End, with a number of companies spreading across North America. Its producers, Mischief Theatre, are developing a franchise with at least two other comedies in London, as you can see here: https://mischieftheatre.co.uk/shows/
Do not expect subtle or cerebral humour from any of them.

I recently spent 3 weeks in London, and went to the following:

  1. Motown the Musical - Being from Michigan, I had to see how London represents! They did well!
  2. The Play that Goes Wrong - I actually saw this twice. The first time I went alone, but by the time it was over, everyone around me were friends because we were all laughing so hard. The little boy in front of us peed his pants. It is that funny. The second time, I brought a friend along, and it was just as good! Highly recommend - smaller, more intimate theatre, better prices.
  3. A Comedy about a Bank Robbery - Meh. It was good, but there are better shows in London.

I also HIGHLY recommend Wicked, in Victoria, if you haven't already seen it.

Have fun!

I agree with Continental about seeing something that’s not in the US yet which is why I saw “Everyone’s Talking About Jaime” when I went last year. I just loved it. Mousetrap is really good too and is the longest running play in London. Although, “The Play That Goes Wrong” is in NYC, I believe it’s closed or is closing soon so see it in London. It’s absolutely hysterical.

A year ago we saw 42nd Street and loved it!! It is spectacular when the curtain rises and you see 40 pairs of legs tap dancing! You will not be bored! If you love glitzy sparkling costumes, this play is for you! The revival of 42nd Street is the best!

Just read a review on Six and it sounded fantastic! A cross between history and pop culture!

Claudette, I saw it in London a while ago and LOVED it. One of the funniest plays I've seen in a long time! I just bought a ticket to "Alys, Always" at the Bridge Theatre and am looking forward to it. It has a short run through 30 March.
