Playlist for Best of England Tour

I like to create playlists of music from the country I’ll be visiting. This autumn, it’s the Best of England tour. I already have all sorts of English singers/bands in my iTunes, from the Beatles to the Stones, from Kaiser Chiefs to Keane, from Petula Clark to Adele. (I even have Scooch. I am not proud of this fact.) Throw in some Oasis and a metric ton of ‘80s stuff and I’d have a playlist to last for days.

What I’d really like to include is more traditional music from England, and by “traditional” (which is not really the right word but I can’t think of a better one) I don’t mean 'Greensleeves' and 'Scarborough Fair.' I’m looking more for songs that English people are practically born knowing. The kind of thing that’s sung at the football or at a wedding. That song that comes on the jukebox in a pub or wherever and people will start singing along. A tune that means England to you.

I’ll probably also throw in a little classical … a bit of Elgar or something like that. Other suggestions are welcome. I’m also happy to add songs that aren’t necessarily English themselves or even sung by an English person (e.g., Sinatra singing “A Foggy Day”) but which evoke England.

Thanks. I’ve received great recommendations when I’ve asked this same question for other countries and am hoping I’ll get some terrific ideas for England too.

Emeli Sande, Read all about it part III.

She's British, its British modern music, pretty sure this featured in the London 2012 Olympics and it was the backing music to the first audition of 'Attraction' who won Britains got talent, with a very British version of an act by Hungarians! Lol. They deserved to win.

This says Britain to me and fills me with pride. 🇬🇧

Well, it's hardly juke box fodder, but my 'English' music - the stuff that makes me think of home when I'm away - is Vaughan Williams 'Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis' and/or 'The Lark Ascending'. If going for some Elgar, try the Cello Concerto, his late masterpiece. (If you like the sound of Tallis, try his 'Spem in Alium' - I marvel at how he wrote a 42 part motet and knew what it would sound like in Elizabethan England).

For more modern takes on English Folk music try 'King of Rome' (this had me tearing up on a road trip to Sedona, but as a northerner, we are injected with 'the Brass Band needle' at birth!) and 'Mount the Air' by The Unthanks. Kate Rusby's 'Jolly Ploughboys' is good and she does a good version of The Kinks 'Village Green Preservation Society'.

For more poppy material I have an enormous soft spot for XTC's 'The Everyday Story of Smalltown' and, the ying to the formers yang, Andy Partridge's 'When We Get To England'. Mix in a bit of 'Red, Red Rose' by Hope and Social and sprinkle with a bit of Kate Bush (almost anything, but try 'Sunset, or 'Never Be Mine' or the obvious 'Oh England, My Lionheart') and voila, a not too obvious English playlist!

Jerusalem is a good call - words by Blake - and the other hymn everybody can sing as it's almost inbred into us, is 'Abide With Me' - the football hymn. Whisper it, but I love the Welsh National anthem (Land of my Fathers) too.

Happy listening and I hope you have a great trip.

Ian (like the Kaiser Chiefs, 'an old Leodensian'!)

Football songs sung by players are best avoided! Songs played at matches include Queen - We are the Champions at Manchester United, You'll Never Walk Alone at Liverpool and Three Lions by Badiel, Skinner & The Lightning Seeds at England matches.

There are no particular songs that are sung at weddings, it's down to the bride and groom to choose.

Singalong songs would be Abba (not British), Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen, Angels by Robbie Williams, One Day Like This by Elbow, Shine and Rule the World by Take That and Space Oddity by David Bowie.

Traditional would be Jerusalem, Land of Hope and Glory and Rule Britannia, as sung at The Proms.

I don't think of England as being that foggy, so Sinatra wouldn't have entered my head!

Since you ask about " classical " music , there is a surfeit of great works by English composers , and I could go on for hours , but for now I'll limit myself to a few lovely examples - George Butterworth - " The Banks of Greenwillow " https://youtu.be/AUsisFkLCxo , Also by Butterworth -" Two English Idylls " https://youtu.be/l1ApBSs18g4 , Sir Malcolm Arnold - " Four Scottish Dances " https://youtu.be/wHnBibfWu2Y , and finally , for now , Ralph Vaughan Williams - " English Folk Song Suite " https://youtu.be/D0sC4xbyT5c , Do enjoy these , plenty more from where these came from .

Oh my gosh-I love this topic. Mike J, that was a truly special, evocative, moving and beautiful performance by the Shadow people. I teared up, too. Thanks everyone for posting some wonderful ideas. I'm going to Scotland next year with time in England before my journey north. These recommendations will certainly be on MY playlist. Thanks for the terrific idea, Teresa.

Andi - for Scotland, try Runrig, Peatbog Faeries and Treacherous Orchestra for starters. I'm sure Scots will be queuing up to advise you as there's so much more, but these are a great starting point for driving through the Highlands!

Two thumbs up for "Jerusalem", as mentioned by harleydonski!
Also "Land of Hope and Glory".
These are my two favorites I'd recommend.

This is all exactly what I was looking for. I can't wait to get home and fire up iTunes/YouTube/etc. Looks like I may have to make two playlists: one classical and one not.

Keep 'em coming! Thanks!

These are songs that remind me of England or places in England whenever I hear them. Some are rather obvious and not necessarily English artists ...

Kate Bush - "Wuthering Heights" ("out on the wiley, windy moors")

CSN - "Cathedral" ("flying in Winchester Cathedral ...")

Kirsty MacColl - "A New England"

Warren Zevon - "Werewolves of London"

The Clash - "London Calling"

Dire Straits - "Sultans of Swing", "Wild West End", "Expresso Love"

Squeeze - "Tempted" - ("a flannel for my face")

Morrisey - "Everyday is like Sunday", "Irish Blood, English Heart"

Tom Jones - "Sex Bomb" (only because this was released the year I lived in London and seemed to be played everywhere)

The BBC charity version of "Perfect Day" https://youtu.be/dfddYDRIFGY

"Jerusalem"

Although he's Scottish, one of my favorite artists in the UK is Dougie Maclean. He puts his own spin on traditional Scottish tunes, writes his own songs as well, and IMHO it's gorgeous! I've been following him for 30+ years and have seen him in concert quite a few times. Recommend his songs Caledonia, Green Grow the Rashes, Ready for the Storm, This Love Will Carry, Talking with my Father, Holding Back, Broken Wings, Garden Valley, to name just a few!
Another contemporary artist I really like who lives up near the Lake District in England and is well known in that area is Fiona Clayton. Although her music isn't "traditional" it definitely has a Cumbria-flavored tone because of her accent, style of singing, and song content. She's really lovely to listen to!

I've just watched Mike J's YouTube link and all I can say is: I'm not crying, you're crying!

That was really lovely, and a good song too.

Since Best of England also goes to Wales, how about some of the standards by Welsh Male Voice Choirs?

Here is the Treorchy Male Choir which is one of my favorites altho the Best of England does not go thru the Rhondda Valley.

Some of my favorites are Cwm Rhondda, Ar Hyd y Nos, Men of Harlech.

Catrin Finch is a wonderful Welsh Harpist.

If you are doing Welsh songs, you MUST check out You Tube for a spoof version of Jay Z and Alicia Keys Empire State of Mind called "Newport" (town in Wales). Youtube.com/watch?v=Eijc2tGe-zM. Newport couldn't be further from New York!

Elbows "One day like this" I have seen as referred to as England's unofficial anthem.
They played it at Glastonbury the other week.
I"ll plug Richard Hawley
"Heart of Oak" it's on you tube and filmed a mile from me.
On name check songs,Down to London-Joe Jackson
More traditional.
Home on the Swale ,there's a YouTube version from Dungworth

Glad someone already mentioned Ralph Vaughn Williams! I'll add the soundtrack to Pride and Prejudice (the Keira Knightly/Matthew Macfayden version) by Dario Marianelli- it's lovely, peaceful music for early morning drives through the countryside. I cheated a little and used it for driving through Ireland a few years back- it works well there, too :) Along those lines, soundtracks from other British movies and shows would be fun additions to your playlist. Have a great time!

For London:

Skepta - "Shutdown"

What's funny is that the place where they shot that video looks like a tough project, but is actually a fairly posh part of London.

In line with the idea of evoking England - I've always had a soft spot for Roger Miller's "England Swings" - light hearted and jaunty. Love the idea of creating a playlist - such a fun way to connect to memories afterward!

Laura hit my quintessential London song: Dire Straits-Wild West End. We found ourselves in front of the old A. Angelucci coffee shop one night, I think they had recently closed the location down, and other elements of the song fell in as we walked. One of my all timers, a beautiful song, and one of the finest debut albums ever, imo.

Nice write up on the song here:

I thought I would add these two selections , quintessentially British - Percy Grainger , " Molly on the Shore " https://youtu.be/66wSECRpWIY and this selection by a relatively unknown composer - Roger Quilter , " Suite from " Where The Rainbow Ends " ( 1911 ) . https://youtu.be/FDA8pPeTxTo Good selections for your classical list , hope you like these !
