Planning Family Trip to the UK in June 2025

I'm planning a trip to the UK in June 2025 with my wife and our three teens (aged 17, 15, and 13), marking our first international family adventure.

Our itinerary begins with 6 nights in London, followed by a train journey to York where we'll stay for 2 nights. From there, we'll continue north to Edinburgh by train for a 3-night stay before flying out from there.

In terms of accommodation, I've been exploring options, and the Premier Inn chain appears promising due to its affordability and convenient locations, even though we'll likely need two rooms. I've come across recommendations for Premier Inn in London on this forum, but I'm curious about opinions on their offerings in York and Edinburgh.

Do you think there are advantages to staying at a Premier Inn versus opting for an apartment rental? Additionally, any feedback on our travel plans would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a sensible itinerary. Good work on that!

Premier Inns are, IMO, pretty much the same from one to another. I would read reviews on the specific properties, though, especially as regards location, noise, etc. Yes, you'd need two rooms and breakfast is not included. It is a bit spendy unless you eat a lot in the AM.

For 2 and 3 nights stays, a hotel makes sense. For 6 nights in London you may appreciate the extra space in an apartment as well as the opportunity for casual at-home breakfasts or take-out meals. Beware you stay somewhere central. Prices are lower further out but you lose a lot in convenience. Staying centrally you have a lot of buses and tube options as well as the ability to get to so many places on foot.

I would not stay in a hotel in London with a family of 3 teens, and would definitely consider an apartment or Airbnb or something to have a bit more space. Although staying in central London is great; when we took our two teens we stayed outside in Richmond in a lovely flat near the high street; taking the train into central London; but also enjoying the area around Richmond, and enjoying the local pubs, Richmond Great Park, and venturing out to Hampton Court Palace, Windsor, Salisbury/Stonehenge.

Premier Inns are a good choice.

For York, consider the Minster Hotel. in a great location walking distance from the city center. https://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g186346-d210394-Reviews-Minster_Hotel-York_North_Yorkshire_England.html

When I researched for our drive tour of England a few years ago, most AirBnB apartments were not close to the city centers. Didn't want to take public transport. Preferred lodging walking distance from city center.

Happy for your family as this should be an excellent journey to create wonderful memories. We were a party of five and stayed in a rental for a week this past May. Even with a bit more expense than two hotel rooms the benefits of having additional space and a kitchen are huge. There are a variety of companies offering space to let on a weekly basis. For June recommend you select one with air conditioning. We stayed in Pimlico, a short four block walk south of Victoria station and within a residential area. Give thought to developing a menu of options to visit and allowing a bit of flexibility based upon weather and stamina. Please consider taking advantage of attending one or more of London’s theater offerings for they are great value and excellent entertainment.
