Planning a London visit

Hello,
my family of four will be visiting London for the first time in March. We will be there for 8 days, Fri- Mon in London, Tues & Wed in Paris and Thrs, Fri back in London. . As we try to make a list of places we would like to visit we both in London and its country side ( Bath, Salisbury) we are looking at areas to stay in. Although we would love to stay a few nights in the Bath area, I'm curious if it would be better to have a home base in London & commute?

London makes a marvelous base for some great day trips. We have often spent a week or more in London and done several day trips by train. Bath, Cardiff, Stratford-upon-Avon, Winchester, Windsor, York, Brighton, and many other places are very easy day trips by train. For some locations, such a Bath, you'd want to purchase advance tickets to save on the price. Or get a BritRail pass and you can be flexible on your travel choices. We found a day trip to be plenty of time for Bath.

Here's a link to an article I wrote for TripAdvisor about some of our favorite London places and day trips:

I count 4 days on the ground in London, maybe only 3. Read Emma's post twice, about what daytrips you don't have time to do in that amount of time.
