Places to visit while driving from Conwy to York

Hello! First time posting, but a big fan of Rick and all the info on this site. My wife and I are visiting England and Wales in a few days and are finalizing our itinerary. At one point we'll be renting a car and driving from Conwy to York.

Are there any interesting places worth stopping to briefly visit on the way? Preferably not larger cities like Liverpool, Manchester, or Leeds. The only place that stood out to me was Chester, but I am open to other ideas.

Thanks!

Almost anywhere in the Peak District NP would also work.
Is this just a one day drive? If so, Chester will easily fill your available time anyway.

Unfortunately if you take the direct route, it is nearly all motorway and passing big cities. Depending on the day, it is also busy with three lines of traffic...

As you've discovered there are no really good places to have a break between Manchester and Leeds. Rather than motorway driving, you could take the Woodhead route, the A628, which takes you through the top of the Peak District to pick up the M1. Map here.

Chester is worth a stop with its walls, cathedral and ruined castle and of course The Rows shopping area.

Another option would be Harrogate, a Victorian Spa town but that is quite close to York.

Thank you all for the replies! Yes this is just a one-day drive. I just figured since we have the freedom of the rental car we might as well get some use out of it and see something worthwhile along the way.

I think we may combine both of those ideas: stopping for a bit at Chester and also taking the more scenic route through the Peak District.

@isn31c why do you suggest using the park and ride at Chester? Is traffic horrible there?

It's a medieval city centre with all that means for traffic and parking. That is why Chester has a network of 4 or 5 park and ride sites on the various approaches, plus a free bus for those arriving by train. It means less hassle and aggravation for you. The park and rides will get you closer in than you could drive and park anyway. No one is stopping you driving in if you want to.

Gotcha, yeah that sounds like it will probably be the better option. Thanks!
