Places to Stay in Winchester, England

My son is currently studying at the University of Winchester in England. Does anyone know of a "Rick Steves" type of place to stay for one or two nights? I want a place that's clean, friendly, not too expensive, and walkable from the train station. Thanks!

I have spent a lot of time in Winchester over the years and did not know there is a university there. I see that it is quite new. At any rate, if you e-mail the tourist office there, always staffed by friendly and helpful people, you may get some suggestions. tourism@winchester.gov.uk

My mom and I stayed at the King Alfred Pub in 2011 and quite enjoyed it. It's a real locals' pub with very nice (not fancy), clean rooms overhead. The owner and staff were very accommodating and friendly, and a delicious breakfast was served in the dining room. We ate dinner in the pub a couple of evenings, which was very nice - both in terms of convenience and quality of the food.

A very good friend of mine teaches at the university, and it isn't actually that new - used to be King Alfred College! I love Winchester - lucky you to have a son in university there.

I stayed at the Wykeham Arms several years ago. I don't recall the price range, but it was a great hotel in a good location. It's also part of a nice restaurant/pub.

The Wykham Arms is rather expensive but it is in the town centre and close to the cathedral. A longish walk from the train station, though. There is a daily "flea market" close to the Arms, which is fun.

Thanks for the ideas. I will check out all of them. I've been to England four times but never to Winchester, and I'm looking forward to having my son as my tour guide. I appreciate the help, everyone!

Andy - I forgot to mention that the King Alfred is a very pleasant 10-ish minute (if that) walk to the train station, so you can weigh that into your decision. Have fun, wherever you stay!

When we visited Winchester a number of years ago, we stayed in a B&B in the countryside - definitely not walkable from the train station. But, how fortunate for you to be able to visit and have your son as a tour guide. We thought Winchester was a very gorgeous and nice town.
