Peter Carney Guide/Hadrian's Wall

Let me first say, I cannot remember who recommended him on this forum, but I have to thank you, whoever you are!

We booked a full day tour of Hadrian's wall with Peter and he was the absolute highlight of our entire 17 days in England! We landed from Texas the day before in Newcastle and took the train to Hexham. Peter picked us up early at our hotel the following day, drove us to the various historical sites and museums and was so detailed. He asked us on the drive to the first location exactly how much we know/don't know and want to know. We said "Start from Scratch!" and he did. He was so patient with my husband and I and all of our questions. This was our first trip to England and he gave us so many recommendations for a return trip to the Northern portion of England that we are already planning to use him as a guide for a further portion of Hadrian's wall. He is a retired history teacher and his knowledge of most places is astounding. He was very engaging and not boring or sounding as though he was reading from a script. We would not hesitate to use him again nor would we hesitate to recommend him. He had so many details and a few guesses as to why Hadrian /the Romans did this or that, it really made us wish we had booked him for 2 days in a row so we could do more.

Can you share the contact information for Peter? We will be in northern England/Scotland for the month of September & may utilize his services. Thanks for sharing.

JimmyB-
Absolutely!

I am new to the forum since November or so and not sure how to post a link so if the link isn't allowed or doesn't post, I will tell you that you can Google "Peter Carney, Hadrian's Wall" and his website will pop up.

I HIGHLY recommend you use him for the tour. He was probably one of the better private guides we have ever taken on any of our travels over the years.

I’m pretty sure that it was probably Carol Now Retired who recommended him. She has used him before and recommends him highly, although so have many others here on the forum.

Here is a link to his website: https://www.hadrianswall-walk.com/

Thank You!!! I've been exploring his site. Did you do a private tour or was it a group tour in a van?

We spent a wonderful day with Peter nearly ten years ago. I don’t recall recommending him recently, so I think you got the recommendation from someone else. It’s nice to hear you had a great day with him.

Carol and Mardee-
It very well may have been a post from years ago even though I am new in the last few months using the site. Nigel had told me to look back through previous posts for something else, so this may have been one of the things I "searched" for in former posts because there really wasn't a lot of posts on Hadrian's wall in the forum.

JimmyB- He does private tours. He picks you up in his car that seats 4 persons (3 in back and 1 up front with him) but he may do larger groups with a larger vehicle? Not sure. I know when you book him, you have him for the day. I saw where he does educational ones with quite a few people in the photo, so I am not sure if he is picking them up or meeting them or how that works. I loved listening to his theories as to why this or that occurred because he said there really wasn't a whole lot of documentation as to why they did certain things. He also points out little known facts you would miss just going it on your own. He walks you through the museum and points out and further educates you on various items on display and just makes me wish he were my history teacher in high school! I have always had an utter disdain for learning history because my high school and middle school teachers and even college profs were all so bland and made it so uninteresting. Peter takes time and all ages. My husband is a history/geography buff so he knew some of it, but wanted to hear it all over again. Peter knows some of the archaeologists who are on the digs and will take you to the dig sites and explain so much detail. Cannot recommend him highly enough.

I am so glad that you had this great experience. That is what this forum is all about. Sharing great experiences/guides so that others can benefit. You have now passed that along for someone else.

I never miss a chance to recommend Peter because he is, as you noted, outstanding and makes this area come alive in an amazing manner.

And to think your post YEARS ago could've been "the one" that tipped me off to Peter! :) I have such a horrible memory, I can't remember now who posted it.

I had heard Peter booked up quickly and when I booked, he only had that one day left in our schedule otherwise we would have had him take us out again for a half day the next morning before our train left for York!

He had seen our flight schedule the day before (I think you were in on the conversation a few months ago where someone recommended I fly from London to Newcastle instead of the train and it worked!) and he said, "Oh, no! That long flight to London then the dash to the Newcastle flight then a train to Hexham? You will be tired so we may need to make an easy day of it." and I said, "No way!" We did slow him down asking so many questions (our first trip to England, first full day in England so we were full of chatter) and he was absolutely lovely. I would love to book him for other tours.
