Parson's Green Tube Station Questions

Hello All,

I am on the verge of finalizing plans to rent an apartment with a roof top terrace that is a two minute walk from the Parson's Green tube station. I am staying for nine nights and the apartment is 159 GPB.

After looking at the address using Google Earth, it seems that the apartment is on a lovely street, directly across from a pretty green space called Parson's Green; the neighborhood seems to have nice looking apartment buildings, shops and restaurants.

Although this area is not directly in central London it appears to be in Zone 2 and have fairly easy city center access. My understanding is the Westminster area with Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, Trafalger Square and so on is about a 25 minute ride, South Kensington about 15 minutes and West End, a little longer, at a 40 minute ride.

I am just beginning to try to understand the nuances of the London Underground. Does the Parson's Green station provide easy access to the main tourist areas? Will it be necessary to switch lines frequently? Is it a primary line that runs to most places or an off shoot, less traveled line, less convenient line? Does it run late at night?

Am I making a mistake to consider an apartment in this area? I will be staying for nine nights and assume I will be returning to my flat later in the evening on many nights. When I was in Paris last summer, it stayed light for so long and there were so many fun things to do, it was not unusual for my niece and I to be out until after midnight. I'm thinking London will be the same. I don't want to worry that it will be difficult to get home trying to navigate the tube system.

Any information or advice would be most welcome.

Parson's Green is on the District Line, which in central London roughly runs along the north bank of the Thames. You will be in easy reach of Westminster Abbey and Parliament, much of the City, and the Bankside area without changing. By changing at Earls Court, you can go onto the Piccadilly Line, which will take you into the central West End, Covent Garden, and the British Museum without further changes. So generally not bad.

There is usually no problem using the Underground out into the suburbs late at night as the trains and stations nowadays stay busy until the end of service. The only potentially risky thing would be if you were travelling INTO the city very late at night, as your starting station and the trains will be a bit more empty. The Underground generally runs until around midnight. After midnight there is a night bus service N22 from Piccadilly Circus.

There are 6 trains on each branch (Edgware Road / City) per hour through most of the day.

The last train to Parsons Green leaves Tower Hill at 00:17 arriving at 00:47, except Sunday when it is 23:51 & change at Earls Court.

It has been a few years since I have been in Parsons Green, but I used to go there fairly often for nice bed furnishings back when Blue Peacock was still in business and I got bits and pieces for my car electronics at another place.

There were, and I expect still are, plenty of hipster restaurants and groceries there, as well as more mainstream groceries. The Green is nice, and where I usually found free parking on weekends. If you are driving I'd advise to be super careful about parking regulations lest you wind up significantly poorer than you expect.

It is very much a "yummie mummies" type neighborhood and you will see plenty of upmarket baby pushchairs and a fair number of ladies who lunch.

You will find the night bus "interesting" and quite a bit slower than the Tube.

If you really expect to be out after midnight a lot you may find the prospect of the night bus or cabs a bit daunting so far out.

Maybe change your hours a couple of hours forward?

Have a great holiday...
