Parking/hotel help for York

Hello. We plan to be first-time visitors to York in May, 2027. We will arrive on a Sunday afternoon. We are traveling with another couple who will also have a car. I understand it can be very difficult to park in York as well as expensive and this is a factor we are considering as we are looking for a hotel. We have a short time in York and I would like to focus on the city center. Can anyone recommend a hotel with free parking or a public car park that would be safe to leave the car overnight that is close to the city center? We would not need in/out privileges. Any suggestions or advice anyone can offer?

I understand there may be a Park & Ride option but it doesn't appear that I can leave the car overnight and I need to keep the car for other locations I'm visiting in England, so this doesn't seem like an option for me.

Can anyone advise on what might be the best course of action for me?

Look at a hotel’s amenities when researching hotels to find which offer parking (not necessarily free). A quick search of two Premier Inns and the Hilton York showed they have parking. There are plenty of parking garages to choose from. One car park I looked at, Marygate Car Park York Parking, showed it was open 24 hours.

You simply need to decide how far from the historic you’re willing to go.

On a just completed trip one could pay for parking using cash or contactless. Not all locations had contactless capability. Many required you enter the vehicle license plate number, so have it handy.

The Minster Hotel has a parking lot beside the hotel and is only about a block or so from the York Minster and that area of downtown.
We stayed here and really liked this hotel.

Car park safety: car parks often have CCTV so car thieves will tend to avoid them as they don’t want to be caught on camera. I don’t know but would guess that more cars are stolen when parked on the street. Also. With modern car locks car theft is not the problem it was

Regarding personal safety, I think UK car parks are generally considered safe but as in any modern country do be aware of potential dangers

We stayed at the Minster Hotel, that has free parking and it is located walking distance from the north gate of the city.
