We found an apartment rental with good reviews in Paddington. Is this a nice/safe location to stay for a family of four with 2 kids, ages 8 and 10? We will be in London in early June.

Paddington is fine. Most of London is relatively safe, you'll know the unsafe areas by instinct and it's highly unlikely as tourists that you'll ever find yourselves in those areas.

When apartments are marketing they often interpret districts loosely. Maybe it is Paddington, maybe it is a housing estate some distance away.
Where exactly are you speaking of? Have you looked at the building and the area on Street View?

I agree with Nigel - descriptions of the areas where apartments are can be misleading, especially on sites like airbnb. I would look at the exact address on Streetview.
