Oyster Card primer resource?

Our family of 4 will be in London for 3.5 days at the start of our trip (morning tube to a NR station) and 3 at the end (well, 2 and a morning trip to Heathrow).
I have now read so many things about Oyster cards that I am just confused. When I went 4.5 years ago I just got one and tooled around with my husband (on business) for a long weekend. Our girls are coming and they are 13 & 15.

  • Do they qualify for a reduced fare card? Do they need a photo taken with it? Is that just for residents?
  • Is the 7-day travelcard just for consecutive days (I believe that's what I read)?
  • Is it better to get a National Rail train into the city initially, so we can use a 2-4-1? I've seen a lot about those on this site but the site for them was not as helpful as I need; it seems to say the 2-4-1 is only valid day of travel. If anyone wants to point me to a site that just lays it out for me, I would LOVE that. Like I said, I've read too many things at this point (including a guidebook that didn't mention 2-4-1)-- just feeling jumbled! --Shelbey

Get a Young Visitor discount applied to their Oyster which makes it a half-adult fare. Other options (Zip Oyster photocard) really only pay off for longer periods.

Yes.

Where are you coming from? To be valid you would need a ticket leaving London at some time.
