We will be in London with our kids, ages 10 and 13 in the Spring. I have read many things about travel in London on the tube with kids and I am confused about the Oyster Card for kids. Do I need to apply for the card that requires a photo of them? We will be there for 5 days and then will return a week later for 24 hours.

Your 10 year old will travel for free on the tube, buses, and DLR as long as they travel with a paying adult. You can get your 13 year old the Young Visitors discount on an Oyster card, and it's valid for two weeks.

You may see references on older posts to getting a Zip Oyster card. This is still available, but has a number of hoops to jump through, and for a one off visit unlikely to save money over the Young Visitors. However, if you are planning a series of visits it could still be worth it as it would be valid up to 15. Look at this if you think this may be of use.
The other alternative is a 7 day child rate travelcard.
