Hi I'm going in london from the 29th April to the 2nd may.
The last time i went to London we bought a travercard for each day but now that I'm searching through the internet I read that it was more interesting to buy an oyster card at the underground so that when we leave we can have the rest of our money and the £5 back which we can't if we buy a visitor oyster card.
Also on the first may we booked the first visit to the making of Harry Potter and we wanted to take the train from Euston to Watford Junction then take the bus to go there.
So my question is, how many pounds should I put on my oyster card to have 3 days (probably on peak since we'll travel during 16 and 19hrs) of illimited tube and buses and to go to watford junction with the pay as you go?
Thanks in advance because I searched on the internet but I didn't really find my answer.
Hi
how much you will need to load onto the card will depend to an extent to how many journeys you make, and how many zones you cross. However a Pay As You Go Oystercard has an upper cost cut-off - once you've passed that on a daily basis, the rest of the Oystercard travel for that day (to midnight) is 'free'. Assuming that your journeys may take you from the Centre (Zone 1) to the main 'outer edges' (Zone 4), I'd perhaps assume 30GBP per card might work. You can always 'top up' the card anyway, if needed.
Okay thank you we'll mainly stay in zone 1 and 2. The only journey we'll make out of london we'll be to go to leavesden.
So even if we take the tube, bus and rail it won't cost more than a travelcard?
It is possible to use Oyster PAYG to Watford Junction, but I don't think it's covered by the Travelcard payment cap.
Watford Junction journeys are capped daily at £16.80, provided they are all off peak. In this case off peak includes travel in the opposite direction to commuter flow.
From what i calculated we'll have to put £40 on the oyster since it is 6,4 the day for 4 days plus 8,10 the travel on peak from euston to watford plus 4,90 the travel back that will be off peak.
Another question if you travel only in zone 1 it's the same price as if you travelled between zone 1 and 2 so if we've already did like 5 travels in zone 1 (which means it can't cost more than 6,40) and then we go to the zone 2 it won't cost anything more than what we already paid? Is that right?
In case I wasn't clear above, peak time to Watford Junction is during the evening as it is with commuter flow. Any time in the morning is considered off peak. The reverse is true from Watford so both your journeys will be off peak.
The only price difference these days between a Z1-Z1 and a Z1-Z2 are single fares in peak time. Once the cap is reached on whatever combination no more will be charged.
Thank you Marco!! So I think £10 will be enough since we'll take it to go there then to return.
