Oxford to the Countryside - How?

I'll be staying in Oxford for three days this June (after 3-weeks touring London and a Rick Steves Tour of Southern England!).

I wish to travel 40-miles out of Oxford to the village and grand house at Compton Verney for the annual 'Potfest' - a celebration of excellent, handcrafted ceramics. This is the entire reason for this grand tour of England

But how to do so? Trains take over 2 hours each way. Buses take slightly over 3 hours each way. Taxis cost a fortune. Should I find a private car service? Rent a car?

Your ideas and recommendations most welcome.

Given it's importance to you, just rent a car. Then spend as much time as you want at your 'fest'.

I agree, rent a car. You've looked at the public transport options and they're not feasible for you so your only option is to rent a car (personally I think it's the best option).

Compton Verney is in the middle of nowhere - I used to drive nearby.

But I really can't imagine how you get 2 hours by train?!? Banbury is only one stop.

Rome2Rio??

I agree with getting a car for the duration.

Bear in mind that Oxford is anti-car, if you drive in town you need an environment permit before the drive and parking is pure and simple awful.

Get your car just before you leave.

Get very comprehensive directions from the rental place because you need to take a long detour since the Botley Road is closed and you have to drive towards town but avoid it.

Can you return the car elsewhere? Where are you going after Potfest?
