We are traveling via private car from Oxford to London with our adult kids and wondered if there was anything worth stopping for along the way?
Bekonscot Model Village & Railway in Beaconsfield near High Wycombe on the M40 might be of interest to some...
The world's oldest (1929, set in the 1930s) original model village is worthy but not on many overseas tourists' lists.
It is around half way on the short trip to Oxford.
Look at www.nationaltrust.org.uk. Before you leave Oxford to check their listings. You can buy memberships or passes online. You should also make reservations for timed entry locations at other venues. I might go to Hampton Court Palace or Windsor.
are you driving from Oxford into central London? I see you have 4, but are you aware that you can get there faster, cheaper by train. Oxford into either Marylebone station on Chiltern or Paddington station on GWR. The trains go at up to 125 mph.
Or do you mean Heathrow as I originally assumed but you didn't say. I was confused by your direction of travel - from Oxford instead of to Oxford...
what month will this be?
This will be in September. We are taking the train to Oxford for an event and thought it would be nice to do some sightseeing on the way back.
There are three National Trust properties that maybe of interest:-
Hughenden near High Wycombe is the former home of the Victorian prime minister Disraeli.
Waddesdon is a former Rothschild French Renaissance chateau style house (that also offers an excellent cream tea). Itβs a bit more of a diversion to see this from Oxford but it is more unusual in style.
Greys Court near Henley is a more typical NT house and garden.
If you are at Greys Court, just a couple of miles earlier is Nuffield Place, the home of the man behind MG cars, Morris Garage. Very interesting and kept much the way it was. Not everybody has a workbench and tool cupboard in his bedroom!
