Hi - We will be arriving in Woodstock on a Sunday afternoon to tour Blenheim Palace the following day. Is there a good way to see a little of Oxford on Sunday afternoon? Is there a guided tour anyone would recommend, or is it best to just take a map and walk around the town? I was interested in touring some of the schools, but it being a Sunday, I’m not sure that’s possible. Thanks!
Taking a map and walking around town is fun, but if you want to learn some of the history (and gossip) about the place, take a Footprints tour - https://footprints-tours.com/oxford/oxford-walking-tours. They offer a 2-hour free tour led by university students, starting at 11 am and 2 pm, even on Sundays. There are also paid tours by the same company that get you into some of the colleges. I've found tours like this give you a much richer experience than touring on your own. Be sure to tip your tour guide!
You can catch a bus from Woodstock into Oxford fairly easily - see timetable. https://tiscon-maps-stagecoachbus.s3.amazonaws.com/Timetables/Oxford_Timetables/7_current.pdf
I personally love walking around Oxford in the evening or early morning, is best. I think Magdalen College will be open for you, depending upon what time your arrive in Oxford. Well worth a visit, it's so beautiful.
How long are you staying in Woodstock? It's not a big place, so you'll find your way around easily enough. I recommend The Woodstock Arms for dinner or The Crown pub.
Thanks for the information! We have booked a footprints tour for Sunday afternoon!
