Oxford & Durham lodging?

Do you have a place to recommend? Planning - hoping! - to be in England this summer, & looking for beds: central areas, not too many stairs, private baths, fairly quiet, & in Durham walkable from the train station. Love historic buildings & decor, quirks et al, but still want a good mattress & enough space to do more than maneuver around each other. Included breakfast a bonus but not make-or-break. Thanks in advance!

My suggestions-
1. Hotel Indigo Durham
20 minutes' walk from the station (although watch the steps from the station if you have heavy suitcases). A beautiful hotel in an old Victorian building with period features, which used to be the university administrative building. Well-located, about five minutes' walk from the centre of the city. Spacious and well-appointed rooms, together with friendly and helpful staff.

  1. Farnley Tower This is a bit further away from the station, so you will need a taxi, but definitely worth looking at. It's in a quieter residential location in Neville's Cross, about 20 minites' walk from the centre. It's more of a guesthouse than a hotel, but nonetheless very friendly and helpful staff. Huge rooms with lovely views over the garden. Nice quirky Victorian building. Great Indian restaurant.

Oxford
We really liked Vanburgh House Hotel. It's on St Michael's street, close to Christ Church, and has a real boutique feel about it. It's a nice old building, and you could not get more central. Staff are great, and although they don't do breakfast, they have a deal going with the neighbouring cafe. The rooms are a little smaller, but not too small. Only downside is that it's a terrace facing the street, so can be a little noisy some evenings if you have a street facing room.

There is the Premier Inn , Walkergate in Durham. It's about a ten minute walk from the station and in the city centre. There is a restaurant attached but there are plenty of other eating places within a few minutes walk. Premier Inns have a good reputation - clean with comfortable beds and enough space too!

If you wanted something a bit more historic, there is the Victoria Inn on Hallgarth Street. It is about 20 minutes walk from the station but again a good place for exploring the city. If you didn't want to walk, you could always drop down from the station to Stand K on Milburngate Bus Station and pick up a 56 bus from there. It's 40 minute service.
