I'm driving to LGW from SW England for a 9:45 weekday departure. In order to make the drive at a reasonable time, I will make a leisurely drive the day before, drop my rental car, then stay overnight. Any ideas on where is the most reasonable (ease vs. cost) place to stay? Should I look for a place with an airport shuttle, or just take a taxi? I would like to visit the Gatwick Aviation museum in Charlwood on the day before my flight.

For years we have stayed at Cumberland House B&B whenever our connections didn't coincide with onward flights.
They provide free shuttle to and from the airport as well as delicious English breakfasts.
You will be very happy with the service and the owners.
We are saying there again for 2 nights in May.
We are traveling from London via the Gatwick Express and staying at the Hilton attached to LGW the night before our flight departs...their rates seemed pretty reasonable and we won't have to worry about any issues in the morning....CiCi
The Hilton is the only hotel actually within the airport complex. Any other that calls itself "Heathrow" will need a shuttle bus trip to and from the airport.
We stay at the Sofitel which is linked to the North Terminal at Gatwick and there is a Premier Inn hotel almost next door. The Yotel is in the South Terminal as well as one I haven't heard of before ie the Bloc which is also in the South Terminal

I've used the Hilton there (I thinks it's branded as a Hampton hotel). Basic, reasonable and convenient.
