So leaving today and just want to thank all for your contributions here on this site. Very very helpful information.
Have decided to get the Oyster card with adding on the 7 day travel card because seems widely recommended here.
In that there are 2 of us, the 2-4-1 deals will be financially beneficial. We are opting to booking and choose our tours and excursions as we go so we don't have to commit. Hoping this works out fine. Feel that as we get comfortable there we may feel inclined to venture out and just self tour more. Again, thanks so much for the help and will be toasting the rick steves forum with a pint tomorrow evening!!!! Any last minute suggestions always will to read! Will post when get home about any things that may help others.
Happy travels, you're going to one of the world's best places to visit. My suggestion: when you go to the Tower of London, take a moment on your way out and visit All Hallow's Church right next door. It is open, free (I'm sure you can make a donation) and has a fascinating history (William Penn was baptized there for example; it survived the Great Fire of 1666 with an intresting story). It also has a little meseum of sorts in the crypt below, which is eerily quiet. It also has a part of a floor in the crypt which was part of the orginal Roman ruins built on this site (Tower Hill tube stop across the street has a piece of the original Roman wall to this settlement). 30 minute visit, but definitely worth it.

I don't know if you have flown yet, or will see this before you go, but it is possible you have a misapprehension.
It is possible to add a weekly Travelcard to an Oyster card, although it is invisible and only lives within the card. A Travelcard of any sort on an Oyster card, any Travelcard purchased anywhere other than from a train station ticket window IS NOT VALID for use in the Days Out 2 for 1 promotion offered by the train companies.
In order to use the 2 for 1 promotion you both MUST have a valid train ticket, which a Travelcard issued by a Railway company is.
If you just put a 7 day Travelcard on an Oyster card, and disregard the 2 for 1 promotion you don't need photos.
If you purchase 7 days Travelcards from a railway train station you each need a passport size photo for the train ticket seller to make into the (free) Photocard which is required to purchase a Railway 7 Day Travelcards.
I hope you have a lovely trip....
