I am arriving in London on May 19th, and while I normally never watch tv on vacation, I need to watch the Game of Thrones finale that night (2am in England). I believe Sky Atlantic broadcasts Game of Thrones. I emailed my hotel to see if they have that channel, but I haven’t heard back yet. So in the meantime I’m making a contingency plan. I see that Sky Atlantic has a seven day free trial of Now TV, which allows live streaming of Sky Atlantic shows. My question is, do I have to live in England to sign up for the seven day free trial, or will it work for me as an American visiting London?
If my memory is correct, you have to be from the UK.
Contingency plan to the contingency plan: change your flight. 😂
Kidding....sort of.
LOL, I’m arriving from France, so I’ll already be mid-trip. Can’t change my flight. Bummer that you have to be from England!
I believe there’s a work-around if you don’t live in the UK (VPN?). But tech-savvy minds on this forum would have to explain.
Try MeetUp.com and see if anyone’s having a viewing party. Or, check onlne for pubs that might show it. Or Google Game of Thrones Viewing Party London. Could be a fun way to hang out with locals.
We use HBOs streaming service HBO Now. The GoT episodes load after the broadcast airs ( not sure how long after - hours or the next morning). If your hotel has Wi-Fi you might be able to get a free trial.
If you can wait until the next evening, here is a watch party at a pub:

I’m sure you can find others.
TV recorders are cheap. I rent by the month from my cable company. Delayed gratification, but something to look forward to on homecoming. Plus you can repeat the naughty bits. Great for sports, too, fast-fotwarding through the commercials and slow spells.
I arrive in London a day before you! My plan is to use NowTV. From my understanding you need a UK phone number and have to physically be in the UK to sign up. If that doesn't work, I have HBO at home and I'm going to try a VPN that I've already set up. I'm worried about spoilers so I intend to watch early in the morning Monday. I'm not sure if any of this will work but that is at least my plan!

Thanks! If I'd have to set up a VPN to use Now TV, I might as well try it for HBO GO which I already have anyways.
I've looked into viewing parties, and I will definitely check it out if I can't get the VPN to work.

Thanks, I have HBO Go through a home HBO subscription, but I've looked into it and neither HBO Now or HBO Go work outside the US, except possibly with a VPN.

Thanks! That one is already sold out, but I will look for others if nothing else works.

Thanks, I have a DVR, and that's how I will be recording everything while I'm away. It's just for this one special case that I would like to be able to watch the show live or close to, because it is something that will have spoilers all over social media, and I'd really like to not have the ending of the show spoiled for me and my family. And yes, I realize it is my own fault for not realizing this when I booked my trip!

I'm glad I'm not the only person thinking about this! Good luck with NowTV! I think I am going to set up a VPN and try it with HBO. If it doesn't work I'll look for a viewing party somewhere. And if that doesn't work, I'll just have to try really hard to avoid spoilers!
Pam you're definitely not the only one thinking about it. We leave for our next the end of May and I googled the airdates to make sure all episodes would be out before we left otherwise I wasn't going to start watching. Thankfully spoilers don't bother me.
Ok Pam, I’m curious — what did you end up doing??? Did you find a way to watch?
A VPN may work but I wouldn’t count on it. The streaming services are usually able to recognize VPN and they very well may block it. I tried to watch my beloved Chicago Bears play in Europe as I have NFL’s Sunday Ticket and I was blocked as their streaming service recognized my VPN connection. If you want to be guaranteed to watch GOT, consider getting cable or satellite TV and record it to your DVR. Accessing you own DVR from overseas usually works. Alternatively, purchase good pair of sunglasses and noice canceling head phones as you will need them to avoid hearing or seeing spoilers. Good luck! Good luck to Jon Snow too!
Every streaming service I've tried now recognises I'm using a VPN. I used to get away with it in the past a few years ago but not anymore. I use a well reviewed, paid subscription service and it still will not defeat the likes of Netflix, BBC et al.
It's also highly unlikely that your hotel with have Sky Atlantic, the vast majority of hotels only provide free to air channels and even then many of those are left out. I can only suggest the screening parties that others have recommended or a complete stranger's house.

I'm not there yet... it's the next two episodes that I have to find a way to watch. My plans are below:
- Hope that my hotel has Sky Atlantic (unlikely).
- Try using a VPN with either HBO or Verizon FIOS TV.
- Find a watch party (although all the ones I've found so far are pretty far from our hotel).
- Try to avoid spoilers until we get home (sadly the most likely option).

Thanks for sharing your experience with a VPN. I have a DVR, but I don't have a plan that allows me to access it remotely. I looked into adding that to my plan, but it's not really an option for me for various reasons. I'd be better off trying to avoid spoilers. (The problem is even if I avoid all social media, my young adult children won't, and they will have a hard time not spoiling it.)

Thanks for the info!
Don’t know why I was thinking you were going before the first episodes, in April, when your post clearly says you go May 19!!
Anyway hope your prep for your trip is going well — you’ll be departing soon!!
Try one of the cough alternative streaming sites such as Putlocker or Project Free TV if you really must watch American TV while on holiday!
I think you'll be fine. Just sign up using the address and phone number of the hotel. Since you are physically in England at that time, they will be able to confirm your IP address.
So here’s what I ended up doing. I signed up for the NowTV free trial using the hotel’s address, and that worked. Unfortunately I was unable to download the app needed to watch it on my device, since it wasn’t available in the AppStore for my area (US). I ran out of time before my trip to sign up for a VPN, so didn’t try that option. I ended up just avoiding spoilers and watching when I got home.
Thanks for the follow up.
Jon and Ghost best part.
Thanks for the follow-up Pam. I hope you had a great trip and were able to enjoy the episodes when you got home.
