Northern Rail Sunday Unofficial Industrial Action

Currently Northern Rail train crew are having an unannounced overtime ban every Sunday (yesterday was the 3rd in a row) leading to many cancellations.

Yesterday the resulting train crew shortage was so severe that a region wide Do Not Travel (DNT) notice was issued during the afternoon.

Some routes closed in the early evening, and the DNT was issued because Northern were unable to source other transport.

So for the time being, if travelling anywhere on Northern on a Sunday, travel as early in the day as possible. Other operators in the region are not affected.

When this happened to us awhile back, we rented bicycles and completed the day's journey. It was not easy, my friends, and the Hot Wife almost divorced me, but we made it!

The disruption yesterday was apparently quite a bit more widespread than Northern, although maybe that was where the problems were worst. It seems to be the issues with overtime on Sundays were particularly exacerbated yesterday by it being Father's Day and the first England game at the Euros last night.

This action is now confirmed as official ASLEF action and will now be every Sunday until 27 July as heavy disruption across the Northern network.

Technically this is every day but is having only very limited affect on Monday to Saturday most of the time.

On shared routes with Trans Pennine northern tickets can be used on TPE instead as a special relaxation of rules on Sunday only if a Northern service is cancelled and there would be a wait of over 1 hour for the next Northern train.

I think we lucked out, with Northern tix from York to Preston on Mon 24 June at 11:23, then connecting to Avanti train on to Penrith.

But it looks like the surrounding days for Northern may be impacted to some degree. Safe journeys to everyone!

Shawn,

Do check with Northern Journey Check tomorrow morning. Currently the 1123 is running, but across the Northern network we already have 90 cancellations tomorrow due to the overtime ban.
