Northern Rail Ranger and Rover Tickets in the Lake District

Northern Rail have totally revised their Ranger and Rover tickets in the Lake District.

Gone are the Hadrian's Wall Day Ranger, the Cumbria Round Robin, the Cumbria Day Ranger and the Cumbrian Coast Day Ranger.

They have all been replaced by the Cumbria Travel Pass.

The Hadrian's Wall day ranger had become redundant years ago as it's price exceeded the cost of a normal day return, the extension to Morpeth had been withdrawn as had it's use on the AD122 Hadrian's Wall Bus.
Likewise the Cumbrian Coast Day Ranger had become largely redundant with universal walk up Advance Fares on the route.

The Cumbria Travel Pass includes all trains between Lancaster and Carlisle via Shap, all Stagecoach buses, a 1/2 lake cruise on Windermere, discounts off Ullswater Lake cruises and 25% discount on the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway.

As such it is basically the old Cumbria Round Robin, which was rail only, at a slightly lower price.

It is a bit more than the Lakes Day Ranger (which included buses and Windermere lake cruises, but excluded rail north of Penrith and Workington, and had no discount on Ullswater or the R and ER).

So overall it is a welcome simplification, and better value than before.

Prices are £40 for 1 day, £99 for 3 days or £26.60/£65.90 with any railcard. They can be purchased on demand at any ticket office, or Northern or Avanti ticket machine. No time restrictions.

For those wanting to do the Settle/Carlisle line the North West Round Robin still exists- Preston to Carlisle (not the Windermere branch), Carlisle to Leeds, Lancaster to Leeds, Preston to Leeds via Blackburn.
The fare is £51.50 or £34.25 with a Railcard- not valid before 0900 on Monday to Friday. You may be able to get cheaper walk up Advance Fares for each leg, but it makes life much simpler.
