Hi Stuart,

Thanks for posting this. I have a quick follow up question. In late August, after a few nights in York, I am heading up to Whitby for 5 days. I will have a carryon and backpack. If I take the North Yorkshire Moors Railway to Whitby, would the rover option make any sense for me? While I would like to explore and get off at a few stations along the way, including some hiking, I assume that there are no luggage hold services available?

Yes the rover fare is the best ticket I can see. I can't trace any luggage storage in either Pickering or Whitby, but very left field can in Malton. Not sure if bus times would work for you to backtrack.
Maybe write a pretty please e mail to the railway and ask if they can. In today's security climate I seriously doubt it, but no harm in asking.
Maybe go to Whitby on the bus, then a day out on the train from there, station hopping?
Bus 96 Whitby to Grosmont (or the Coastliner to Goathland) or the Northern trains from Whitby to Grosmont (for Middlesbrough and beyond) may help that latter plan work smoother?
