Our group of 19 is staying in a self catering manor house midway between Exeter and Barnstable. We have seen some excellent reports on south Devon, Dartmoor and Cornwall so have plans to visit that area extensively. I would like to know if we are missing some not-to-be-missed sites along the northern coast of Devon (Exmoor) that we should consider. We are staying a week in September and want to consider all options.
Most of Exmoor is in Somerset, only about a quarter of it is in Devon. To my eye, it isn't quite as attractive as Dartmoor, but it still has some pretty magnificent scenery and you should take the chance to explore it. There is also a lot to see in north Devon itself. Lynton & Lynmouth, Clovelly and my favourite, Great Torrington, would all be on m list. There are also some RHS gardens at Gt Torrington.
One to consider is Lundy, a small island in the Bristol Channel off the north coast of Devon which you access via a boat from Ilfracombe. Lundy issues its own stamps and is largely a wildlife preserve. And just across the county boundary is Dunster. Also in Somerset is the Fleet Air Arm museum.
I would add to consider Exeter itself, the area around the Cathedral though much of the city centre itself was not as rebuilt sympathetically after 1945 as it could have. Some of the inland towns in Devon might also be worth considering, Tiverton and Okehampton springing more to mind.
Watersmeet, a National Trust property near Lynton, is a very pleasant place to while away an hour or so, maybe enjoy lunch in the tearoom.
