Non-alcoholic beers

We have two in our family who don’t drink for health reasons. Pretty easy to get non-alcoholic beer in pubs? Any brands in England you would recommend? Thanks

Beware of cider, though, it is very definitely alcoholic in the UK!

LOL, thanks. We will be in London, Cambridge and Jersey. Two people are zero alcohol and one can’t drink soda either so go-to is non-alcoholic beer. Brands here in US can be awful though now starting to get some good craft type NA beers. So just wondering about brands. Thanks so much.

You should be able to find a non alcoholic beer or lager (actually usually around 0.5% ABV) either bottled or canned, from the pubs you go in. What will be on offer will vary from pub to pub dependent on where they buy in from - there are more smaller breweries now to choose from - a good thing! - and good pubs (imho) will support local breweries. Of the big chains Wetherspoons, despite their other faults, are good at using local breweries.

There are a couple of sites that feature beers for no alcohol drinkers - one is steadydrinker.com and another I found is bbcgoodfood.com. It was from the latter that I found they rated Ilkley Brewery’s ‘Nowt Mary’ highly, a milk stout. (Nick - are you saying you are from ‘somewhere-in-Wharfedale’ like myself?). You can even get alcohol free Guinness now!

If Nick is indeed a fellow ‘Tyke’ then it might be mildly concerning that those falling over themselves to answer questions about beer are all Yorkshiremen! Bring back ‘mild’!

Cheers!

Ian

The no/low alchohol beers you find in the UK are generally MUCH better than what you see Stateside. Two I've had - Bitburger Drive and Becks Blue are usually available in bottles. You can get Heiniken 0%, even Guinness. There is also Adnams Ghost Ship 0.5%.

You should have no issue finding what you are looking for. Just ask the barkeeper what their NA beer is.

For a good American IPA style then Brewdog's Punk AF is the best tasting beer of that style that I've had and it's widely available.

Wow, Guinness? What joy! I also like the tip for an IPA style and thanks for letting us know. All these sound great and much better than the few we have to choose from here.

Don't have to be restricted to beer now either, with the likes of 0% gin.

Oh, you're in for a treat!

For those of us who don't drink, come from the US where NA or 0% options are limited (and almost never, ever available when out and about at bars or restaurants), yet still like the taste of beer, lagers, ales, stouts, so on, the UK really is the promised land. There are so many options there. Certainly, those who do drink alcohol will have plenty more options and what's available does come down to where you find yourself. But relative to the US, I'm thrilled at the options available to me when in the UK.

Have fun!

0% gin??? Wow, the taste of a gin and tonic? Our group will be quite glad of these wonderful options

@Tom. FYI: It's a new day here in the States: the non-alcoholic brews from our craft breweries (i.e., Athletic, Brooklyn) are OUTSTANDING. Apparently, over the past decade, there has been a major innovation in the brewing/manufacturing process and we are no longer the old style of swill (e.g., O'Douls). Think I'll go to the fridge now and grab an Athletic IPA ...
