No Bakerloo Line at Paddington Spring Summer

Due to escalator refurbishments Bakerloo Tube trains will not call at Paddington at all from Saturday April 2nd until at least the end of August.

For this reason I would also avoid Baker Street station during this period if you can help it, as it will be overwhelmed with large numbers of people changing from the Circle Line from Paddington to the Bakerloo or Jubilee. It's also not just escalator reconstruction but the construction of a new deep-level corridor from the Bakerloo line platforms to the future Crossrail platforms.

Nigel, we were planning to day-trip Oxford on Sunday April 3 via the train from Paddington, we stay across from the IWM. So what is the best suggestion based on that last comment? Bakerloo to Embankment for the Circle Line, or simply get off at Edgeware Road and amble the 1/4 mile to Paddington?

The new passage way has to be at a deeper level as there are too many services below the main line station for it to be done at a level between ground and the Bakerloo.

Underground passengers at Paddington usually split more or less equally between the Bakerloo and the sub-surface District/Circle/Hammersmith lines. Crossrail is expected to raise the total by 50%.

Edgware Road (note, one "e" not two) is the suggested route with a short walk or Circle Line/Hammersmith and City Line for easier Tube all the way to Paddington.

Larry, be sure you leave plenty of time for walking if you will be at the Elephant. Major road construction there has made life a misery for the locals.

Or will you be planning to use Lambeth North?

So what would be the best (i.e. fastest and most convenient with luggage) to go from Paddington to Kings Cross Station in early afternoon in May? We don't mind at all paying for a black cab ( we rather like them) if traffic is not a problem--- but I know it is in some parts of London with major works going on.

( I know that Circle and Hammersmith lines are the ones for this transfer, but wonder if they will be all the more crowded with Bakerloo out of service at this station).

I would think you be fine, the service is frequent and the new trains are much more roomy. If it looks horrific you are the right side for the cab rank.

Hi, folks--I will need a little help here, if this is the case. I'll be in London last week of May/first week of June and I need to get to Lambeth North from Heathrow. The folks at my guest house told me to take Heathrow Connect to Paddington and change to the Bakerloo line. They said this would be much simpler than negotiating the Tube all the way (stairs and tunnels galore, apparently).

Can anyone please advise? I know there's generally more than one way to do things! Thanks so much.

Sandra, I would take the Piccadilly to Piccadilly Circus and change to the Bakerloo there. There may be some stairs and passageways at Piccadilly Circus, but it isn't too bad an interchange and no worse than you'd encounter going from Paddington rail station to the Bakerloo there.

Sandra, we've gone Heathrow to Lambeth North twice, the second time we did the cross-platform transfer to the District at Hammersmith, if I recall the change then to the Bakerloo at Embankment was not as difficult as the switch at Piccadilly.

Nigel, blame my eyes and a small map for EdgEware. Meanwhile, we stay near the corner of Kennington and Lambeth at the Captain Bligh House, and use Lambeth North. We walked to Elephant and Castle once, and almost got lost going through the subways.

Thank you very much! I will keep both options in mind.

What is the best way to keep apprised and know in advance about these closures, besides through these helpful heads ups from our UK friends? Is there a place on the Transport for London site that lists them? I have used that site a lot to plan London travel. Ann. (Who can't wait to get back to London in September.)

Note that the work was finished ahead of schedule and Bakerloo trains resumed calling at Paddington from yesterday, ie 1 August.
