Newcastle upon Tyne / Northumberland one day hike

Hi, new member here, glad to meet you all! :)

My girlfriend and I will have a spare day to spend in Newcastle upon Tyne / Northumberland region in september. We'd like to do a one day hike or trek to see those beautifull vast landscapes with old rock walls and sheeps running everywhere (sheeps is a must, those hairy cows would be nice too).

Any idea of where we should spend that day? Any specific trail?

Thanks a lot!

Let's assume you have a car, you could get yourself out into Northumberland and do one of these circular walks

In September there will be fewer sheep in the fields as many will have gone to market. Highland cows - you might see some in a field though there are no guarantees.

Or you might decode to stay in Newcastle and explore the city

Hey Max -

Try the old coach roads above Rothbury or wander the grounds and visit the house at Cragside or stroll the beaches, say from Warkworth up to Alnmouth (you’ll have to go inland to reach Alnmouth, a river blocks the way). Or stroll down the coast from Beadnell to Craster, passing Dunstanburgh Castle on the way...

Seeing in sheep in the countryside? Well you generally see them high up, above the ‘intake’ walls on open moorland although yes, they’ll be thinking about bringing them lower down in September. But not seeing them is generally harder than seeing them. The sheep are England’s lawnmowers!

Have a great trip!

Thanks for sharing those very informative links

By "fewer sheep" you mean I will see a dozen during my one day hike, or I will see 200 of them instead of 500 in the peak season? just to give me an idea...

You guys said that Northumberland is not very popular, that I might want to stay in the city... Do you think that park is still a nice place to walk, or it's not worth it?

Thanks

Northumberland is a wonderful place for hiking. We walked both directions from Steel Rigg along Hadrian’s Wall — 2 there and back walks for maybe 6-8 miles round trip for each direction. I wish we had done the suggested circular hike in this area. We also went to Dunstanburgh (I think we started in Craster) — spent quite a bit of time in the castle (English Heritage site). We also did a hike up by Otterburn on a non-firing day. It’s a beautiful area. Really enjoyed Holy Island. There is so much to do!

On a sunny September day the Tyne River valley running through the heart of Newcastle is worth a stroll. With the old industries dead the economy is reviving through high-tech and a sense of preserving the history of the river.
