Newcastle to York by train

We're taking a cruise to England and one of our ports is Newcastle. We get into port at 9:15 and leave at 18:30.
Do we have time to get from the port to the train station to York and back in time? Is it worth it? Haven't heard much about Newcastle and have always wanted to see York Minster. Thoughts or advice?

You have time less time than you think.

If you arrive at 9.15 how quickly can you disembark? You'll need a taxi to Newcastle Central Station (the cruise ship doesn't berth in Newcastle) - allow 45 mins. Then, train to York (1hr plus time waiting for the train to arrive/depart). And do it all in reverse to be back in time for your cruise. Any let's hope for no delays on the return journey. You cannot afford to miss the cruise ship.

If you want to see the greatest building in Britain then Durham Cathedral is closer; or visit Newcastle or the coast near Tynemouth - there's plenty to keep you busy.
