New Weekday First Class upgrades on LNER and Cross Country Trains.

On all Cross Country and LNER services there is now a weekday (Monday to Friday) First Class upgrade available. Buy on the train from the guard if there is space available. On LNER that is almost never a problem. On Cross Country that is more of an issue.

On LNER it is a flat rate of £39 between Doncaster (and all stations south thereof to or from Kings Cross). To all other stations (so York Edinburgh or even Inverness) it is £49.

On Cross Country it varies by distance, but for instance from Bristol to York (a common journey on here, originating on GWR at Bath) it is £35.

I"m actually familiar with LNER. Once, when visiting York I took it to Huddersfield & back to see the two cats at the train station. It was such a nice train and such a nice town and it was so fun to meet some of my furry Facebook 'friends' in person.

There have been weekday 1st class on board upgrades on GWR for some years, the present from dating from 2024.

They are of questionable value in my opinion compared with Advances, (super) off-peak First or for that matter on the day Seatfrog bidding. However. they are available at the same price on any train at any time of day with seats available.

Example fares on popular routes here:

London Paddington —> Oxford: £35.00
London Paddington —> Bath: £60
