What goes around comes around. We used to have such a service- both the Mail and newspaper train (which had passenger cars attached) and the former Euston to Inverness day train on the same Glasgow avoiding route. The day train was called The Clansman.
Both have been gone for many years now. In the case of the Clansman apparently since around 1991.

It's interesting that Avanti have now introduced incredibly cheap Stirling (but no further north) fares from all Avanti west coast main line stations to Falkirk and Stirling and vice versa, in competition with this service that is yet to start.

As low as £7.50 Stirling to the Cumbrian Coast with a railcard. Or £26.40 with a railcard Stirling to Euston.

I found the new fares by chance this morning, while doing a planning exercise. Essentially, at least to Cumbria, Stirling to Edinburgh seems to be a zero cost add on to a Edinburgh to Cumbria ticket using Scotrail from Stirling to Haymarket or Glasgow.

So you can now connect off the Orkney boat at Thurso in the morning, then the 14 hour train journey to London for about £50 with railcard Advance Fares split at Inverness and Stirling
