new photo galleries at Imperial War Museum

Last November the Imperial War Museum in London opened its updated permanent collection displays and there is now a section for war reporting and photojournalism.

This is a big deal because the Army Film and Photographic Unit (AFPU), which was formed in 1941 because the British military was worried that Germany had a head start on propaganda and documentation, has given its entire archive to the IWM.

Reporters and photographers were given a quickie training and then officer status, allowing them to go up to the frontlines without being under constant chaperoning.

The display includes examples of the cameras and other equipment that were used to capture film from the liberation of Belsen up to the second Iraq war.

Francis Gooding has a short article about the displays in the 22 Feb issue of the London Review of Books.
