New Buses from Carlisle to the west end of Hadrian's Wall

From 5 January 2026 a new year round hourly bus service #HW1 will be introduced from Carlisle along the course of the wall to Brampton, then Lanercost, Birdoswald, Gilsland, Greenhead and terminating at the Roman Army Museum- https://www.cumberland.gov.uk/buses/service/HW1

For large parts of the route this is the first bus service in over 20 years, and the most frequent ever.

Ironically it is more frequent than the long standing service over the core, more touristed, section of the wall.

Also from Carlisle to Bowness on Solway a new Sunday service #93S started on 7 December (again the first in decades) and the weekday service 93 has been strengthened-

You will not find these timetables on any internet planner, such as Traveline.

These will be a big bonus to people walking the Cumberland section of the wall. Cumberland Council has no legal powers to extend these services east to Vindolanda and Housesteads (in Northumberland).

This will be a great convenience for independent travelers who want to hike the Wall!

Yes, the established stop (for the existing Wednesday only Border Rambler bus) in Lanercost is at The Fingerpost- the 4 way road junction in the centre of Lanercost, just past the Priory entrance, although I suspect for most of it's route this service will be 'Hail and Ride' - ie- stop anywhere where it is safe to do so.
A remarkable frequency of service.
I hope the trade materialises to support such a high frequency, it is a one year trial.

This is Government Bus Service Improvement Grant money funding both services.
