The RMT union just announced 3 days of strike for July 20.,22,29.We have tickets on Avanti West for travel from St Pancras to Liverpool to visit the open. Anyone have any further information on this? When do they shut down the trains or make the announcements? Are there other options to make the trip? Thanks
You can not have tickets on Avanti from St Pancras to Liverpool, Euston yes, St Pancras no.
It will be a maximum of 3 or 4 days out that timetables will be announced- so around July 16 for the Thursday strike and July 18 for the first Saturday strike. The second Saturday will be the same as the first Saturday. Those are approximate dates, unlikely to be sooner, may be a little bit later.
As these are RMT strikes we pretty much know by now that a broadly hourly service will run from Euston to Liverpool between around 8 am and 5 pm, ish- maybe a bit earlier in the afternoon.
Once at Liverpool Merseyrail for onward travel to Hoylake are not affected by the strikes so will run a full service, probably augmented with either extra trains or with extra carriages.
EDIT- Oh crumbs, just looking back at your earlier post, that's also when the direct Trent Valley route is closed for engineering with diversions through the West Midlands, so if they were only meant to be running every two hours then it's more than likely that will be maintained, but the basic principle of services will run is the same.
Thanks for the great info. You are right Euston. Got confused on another trip !
So where are the timetables announced? We have tickets from Bath to London on July 22, and will be in Bath from July 18 on, so can we just ask at the train station?
EDIT--I am seeing this one on the National Rail Industrial Action page, but I assume the actual timetables will be elsewhere?
In the case of Bath to London (or anywhere else on the Great Western network, like Oxford or Moreton in Marsh) on this web page- https://www.gwr.com/strike
They normally meet close to the date to establish exactly what staff are available and the priorities to be covered. That will probably be the 17th - although that's a bit tight, they are quite used to working it out now! If it's done earlier it's a bonus.
Routes tend to slow late the evening before and are slow to get going the day after - hence doing two in three days.
Thank you for the link--that's very helpful. Though the site says no replacement buses, I'm assuming the regular coaches from Bath to London will be running if that's how we need to go? Not used to knowing about possible canceled trains in advance. Here landslides wipe out the tracks with no warning at all....
Leslie,
Yes National Express will be running. FYI they have already put surge pricing into place for the strike days- quadrupled the normal fares to £29, from a normal £5 or £7. As it's an RMT strike I would be confident that GWR will run an hourly service from Bath to London
this was announced last week https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/england/new-rmt-train-strikes-against-14-companies-20-22-29-july
If they do cancel the Avanti West trains from Euston to Liverpool is there any coach services to recommend that would be direct or minimal stops? Thank you
Three operators- National Express, Megabus and Flixbus all run from London to Liverpool.
