New alternative for Euston Manchester/Crewe rail travel

Things have been going from poor to absolutely awful on long distance train services from Euston station on Avanti West Coast (previously run by Virgin West Coast) since Avanti removed up to 3/4 of its services. The root cause is mostly the refusal of the governing body to allow the rail companies to come to a settlement with the unions. Because the staff have declined to work overtime Avati says they have to create a timetable with huge gaps.

Into the breech, according to the partial article in The Guardian reproduced for you below, has come a charter company running nice trains on the same route to Manchester and Crewe.

Heritage railway takes on Avanti with first class west coast service

Helen Pidd North of England editor - Yesterday 19:22

There has rarely been a worse time to travel by rail in the UK, particularly on the delay-prone west coast mainline, where services have been slashed and passengers are now expected to fork out £365 for a walk-up return peak fare from Manchester to London.

The operator, Avanti, may think it has passengers over a barrel as it has a monopoly on the line.

Not any more. On Friday afternoon a new charter train service operated by a heritage railway company takes its first journey down the west coast, promising cheaper tickets, comfier seats and air-conditioned carriages.

Operating only on Fridays, Locomotive Intercity will run one return service between London and Crewe or Manchester, promising to take passengers to the capital “in comfort and style without the stress of normal rail services”.

With tickets costing just £75, this special charter service will run at 110 mph using electric locomotives and all first-class, air-conditioned coaches. All passengers are guaranteed not just a seat – a luxury on some Avanti services – but tables and 240V power points, as well as decent leg room. Two buffet cars are available on board, serving teas, coffees, snacks and alcoholic beverages.

We took the Avanti West Coast in late July from Manchester to London. We were lucky to avoid the strike days! We ended up being 20 or so minutes late, and as we were pulling into the station the conductor said that passengers were entitled a partial refund because we were late. So I went on the website and submitted a claim and am waiting for a check for around 25 pounds. Kinda surprised at this, especially since it didn't seem like we were too late.

If you had booked an Advance Ticket through the Avanti wesite or App and the train was more than 15 mins late you would have been paid the delay compensation automatically. No need to claim

Good to know. Maybe they’ll send me two refunds. Lol. 😜

Thanks, Nigel. A friend and I will be meeting up in London on Thursday of this week. We'll be in Sheffield, then Liverpool, and returning to London on Saturday, Sept. 3. At least that's our plan. After seeing your post, I checked for options from Crewe to London on that day and discovered that London Northwestern has listed a couple of trains. We had originally planned to take an Avanti West Coast train direct from Liverpool to London on Sept. 3, but as you know, that Avanti is re-evaluating its schedule. As of a few mintues ago, they had not re-listed any trains for Sept. 3. Based on your experience, do you have any thoughts or guesses when Avanti might re-list their schedule for Sept. 3? We're trying to figure out how long we can delay before making alternate plans that would be more complicated, take a lot longer to get to London, and would not be refundable.

See Avanti's information:- https://www.avantiwestcoast.co.uk/travel-information/plan-your-journey/timetables

There will be one train an hour, details to be released on 29 August..

London Northwestern's sister company West Midlands Trains goes Liverpool to Birmingham. Change at Crewe onto LNW at Crewe for London via the fast route of the West Coast Main Line, skipping most intermediate stations and skipping both Birmingham and Northampton. It isn't as fast as the Avanti but perhaps more reliable at the moment. Once an hour leaving Liverpool Lime Street at xx:07, Crewe at xx:51. A longish wait until xx:33, then 2 and a half more hours (2:32) to London Euston.

Maybe not a lot of fun, but doable.
