Neolithic houses behind Stonehenge Visitor Centre free?

Are they free to visit without a stonehenge ticket?

We are planning to do the walk the free public path north of stonehenge and will either park near Larkhill (free parking, shorter walk) or at the Visitor Centre (paid, slightly longer walk). If we can visit the neolithic houses outside the visitors centre for free, that would sway me toward the latter.

I'm fairly sure the exhibition rooms at the visitor centre and not free and the shuttle bus from the visitor centre is not free. I assume you can walk for free from the visitor centre to the public path for free as well (i.e. they check the tickets near where you get off the bus, not near the visitor centre)?

Tickets are checked at the visitor centre. This is the main way into the complex. I don’t know if it’s possible to see the houses if you enter the site via the public footpath, or even if you can enter the site by public right of way (this is possible at a lot of sites but requires walking across fields etc). You can’t see them for free if you enter via the visitor centre. You need to pay to enter the site that way.

We went there last year without paying. We were visiting a friend who is local to the area, and she knew the backroads and public walks to get to the 'henge. We parked at the public car park near the visitor center (I think there was a small fee for this) and then walked close to the road that the shuttles take to get to the stones. On the way back, we walked along the fields/NT land. Since we did not buy tickets, we could not use the shuttles or go through the visitor center. We could go to the gift shop, though. I think the houses are also off-limits for non-payers, but I am not sure.

I really enjoyed walking across the fields and seeing Stonehenge looming up in front.

On a distant Road Scholar tour (2016) the coach dropped us at Durrington Walls/Woodhenge and we walked thru to Stonehenge via Larkhill. As Helen indicates this involved walking thru fields which was fine, just a bit wet as the grass was long. It is a public foot path so allowed. I am pretty sure they checked our tickets at the gated entrance to the stones but then we walked via the barrows and Cursus back to the VC without being checked. I do not remember having tickets checked to see the Neolithic house replicas but my experience is old.

I loved walking from Durrington Walls to Stonehenge via Larkhill. It made the neolithic landscape make much more sense and gave me an idea of the possibilities of community at that time.

Just pay the admission fee and see the whole site. Send me the bill if this is truly a hardship.
