Need to avoid going into London.

Arriving Heathrow early May at 6am. We dont wish to go into London, so thought a centre (obtainable by bus 1-2 hours) to overnight, allowing us to pick up a rental car next day and begin a months travel. Our plan is to head south towards Brighton then west along the coast.
Suggestions please for a picturesque village/town/centre reasonably close by bus toHeathrow?

You could take taxi into Windsor which is a 15 minute ride, then the next morning take the train to Slough ticket is £2.80 and a six minute ride. Slough has many different car rental companies to chose from, Windsor doesn't have any. Staying in Windsor you could visit Windsor Castle, Windsor Great Park and Eton is only a five minute walk away.

To reach Brighton from the Heathrow area involves going onto Britain’s most crowded motorway - the M25. The coast going W from Brighton is a bit of an urban sprawl - although Arundel is worth a visit if in this area. If you have a month to spare for driving around, I would head for the south west or Wales. The Dorset coast is also quite interesting.http://jurassiccoast.org

Forget taxis: just take the National Express coach from Heathrow direct to Brighton (or wherever else you decide on as your starting-point) and work out car rental and the rest of your travel from there.

Pick up the car when you arrive and head out to some place where you want to start your month long trip. With as much time as you have don't cut out the Canterbury, Dover, Hastings part of the country. Arriving at the time you are arriving, traffic leaving town shouldn't be too terrible.
