need assistance figuring out rental car pick up

Arriving at Heathrow - will spend one night in London then need to get to Surrey and from then on will need a rental car. So - I can't imagine I want to pick up a car at the airport and go into the city, correct? Can I take a train to Surrey and pick up a rental car there? Go back to the airport to get a car? Go to a train station in the city to pick up a car? I am fine with standard transmission so don't need to go to airport for more options, but would like to be out of the city as much as possible when I get the car - I don't love city driving even at home.

The only time I rented a car in Britain I DID go back to the airport and then bypassed the city to get to the country roads leading to Bath. Spent some time in the rental car parking lot getting used to right-hand drive.

Surrey is a big county, not a town. Where in Surrey?

There are large swathes of Greater London which used to be Surrey, most of the way to Heathrow, and all of the borough of Croydon, for example and people may still refer to those areas in addresses as Surrey, or it goes all the way to Sussex.

Unless you have especially deep pockets and a love for slow complicated traffic don't try to drive into London.
