Do you have a phone that will take an e-sim? If so, that’s the easiest solution. If not, do you, or anyone you know, have an old phone that you could put a physical sim in? Both those routes are easier than buying a new phone.

What do you mean by an app for your friend's USA phone? What are you trying to do?
If it's to make a phone call while there, you can always download the WhatsApp app, which allows you to message others and make free phone calls. I have WhatsApp and use it a lot when I travel. https://www.whatsapp.com/

You can use WhatsApp without cellular data only when you have access to wifi. With cellular data you can call whenever you have cellular service. And anyone you call or message must also have WhatsApp installed.
