We will be spending a weekend in Sept in London and staying near Victoria Station. We are looking for someplace to go listen to some great music. Indie, alternative, maybe jazz. Not too interested in bluegrass, country ,or some of the other strange-for-London -it- seems music. I know there are loads of music options. We were just looking for a fun experience with some good music and hoping for advice. We've never been to London before and I'm sure the music scene is endless!
Look online at Timeout London. Also, this hidden gem I found 4 years ago, might have something of interest on their schedule,
http://wiltons.org.uk. A quick search on line provided this up to date website http://www.indielondon.co.uk/Music-gigguide/music-gigguide Plenty of options.
Thanks so much for the suggestions. We will definitely check them out!
If you're going to be checking out the Docklands anyway, I highly recommend Jem Finer's longplayer - http://longplayer.org/
It's been playing at Trinity Buoy Wharf since 1999, and is open every weekend. It's kind of a music geek thing, but like I say, if you'll be at the Docklands anyway.... it's visually stunning as well as otherwordly sounding.
Otherwise, Claudia has steered you in the right direction. :-)
I don't know which weekend you plan to spend in London but here's an interesting possibility...
Stow Festival.
We have spent a good deal of time in this east London borough, Walthamstow - there is a family there who are friends of ours that we home exchange with. The town is at the very end of the Victoria Line - about 30 mins ride from central London depending on where you start from. Very gritty area, in the process of gentrification, with a huge immigrant community of people from just about any country you can name - we love it! They have this music festival every year that is very "locally grown" - our friend plays in a band that performs there every year. It's this coming weekend, the 11th - 14th. I can almost guarantee you'll see no other tourists at this event!
If you are a jazz fan, spend a night at Ronnie Scott's. Pull up online to see address!
Also have a look at www.servantjazzquarters.com to see if anything interests you.
We will be there Sept 20-22 so some of the great suggestions won't work! Thanks so much for your help. I've looked up all the contacts and there are some fabulous options. Ronnie Scott's and servant jazz quarters are potential choices and the Wilton's is having a free open house. As usual, too many things to do and not enough time. Can't wait for our trip!
