Museum of London closing end of 2022 for move

Museum of London will be closing, moving, and changing its name. The new location will have a train line running through its middle!

Yes this has been pending for a number of years. The current Museum of London has received limited updating in the meantime, but some things may not transfer so see the old ones while you can!

Disappointed and excited at the same time. In my opinion, it's a highly underrated museum. I'm a big fan of local history museums and enjoyed it far more than the British Museum. Disappointed that it will remain closed until 2026, excited that I have a reason to plan a trip to London for 2026.

I’m with Allan. Underrated. I’ve always told friends to visit it. Especially first time London visitors.

Here’s to a new Museum of London to meander about in 2026!

Thanks Nance! I'd missed that!

I hadn't realized it has been open for 45 years, lol. Hmmm, yes, 1977...a good year, lol. I think I went in 1978 or so, hahaha.

So the new location isn't really that far from the old one? Looking on googlemaps it looks like it is just a few blocks. We could all volunteer to help with a human chain to move the museum displays from one to another, lol. I'm sure they would be open to that and it would help them get open sooner.

The thing I did not like about the current space is that it was so echo-y and loud, especially when there were several school groups in there. Yes, I want those kids in museums but I want some sound baffles. I agree that I did like that it was right next to the Roman Wall segment!

OP -- thank you for the heads up. As someone else mentioned I actually enjoyed the Museum of London much more than the British Museum. And fortunately I will be back in London in another two weeks, so I will make sure to swing by before the current location closes.

The news does make me drift back quite a few years ago, when the museum I work for began the process of tearing down old gallery buildings and building anew while also remaining open. Quite a few little moves as we took possession of new space and moved out of old spaces; for those to be torn down too and be replaced.

Museum of London Docklands site is also excellent. It does concentrate on London's history as a port but covers plenty of social history too.
