Mr

We will be going to several Cotswold villages in a week. Can I assume that the larger ones will have a bank with a cashpoint machine? Also, I read somewhere that cash may be withdrawn from our bank at libraries in the larger towns? Thanks for your help!

I don't understand the title of your question.

Banks are rapidly closing all over the country. Villages never had banks, towns used to but many branches of many banks are closing, usually some branches will remain in larger towns.

I have never heard of getting money at libraries. Many libraries also have closed during austerity of the previous government.

If you want a cashpoint look for a supermarket.

You will have very little use for cash in the Cotswolds - most places accept tap and pay and most people (not all) prefer to tap their phones or cards instead of cash.

If you listed the villages you are intending to visit I can help more.

You did this same thing before, Landsmann. When the posting form asks for a title, it's not asking for Mr, Mrs, Miss, Dr, or what have you--it's asking for a title for your post. If you title your post Mr, most people will think it's wacky, so you need to have a title such as "Getting Cash in the Cotswolds." Hope this tip will help you receive replies in the future.

Nigel is, as always, spot on!

If you do want a little cash, you could try at your local home bank. If you live someplace large enough to have a bank branch with a foreign exchange desk, you should be able to buy a few quid. At the current exchange rate $100 will buy you about £74 - probably too much, but it might not be possible to purchase a smaller amount.

And also, yes - check if the Cotswolds town you are visiting has a Tesco or a Sainsbury or similar. They generally have an ATM. Use Google maps to find the store, then access the website and look at the list of services offered there. That will tell you if they have a cashpoint.

I agree that it would be helpful if the OP used a proper thread title which at least hinted at the reason for the thread. He has certainly done it on previous threads. You can edit the existing thread title, OP.

Perhaps the OP was confused about village/town services. I've never heard of libraries with this service, but post offices certainly offer it. But I agree that a supermarket cashpoint will likely be easiest to find, and a single transaction would probably be sufficient.

Where all bank branches have been closed, a banking hub may be opened where customers of various banks can amongst other things withdraw cash.

A few of these are hosted in spare spaces of public libraries, for example presently in Pershore and Kenilworth. This is to get them up and running quickly whilst suitable permanent premises can be found. They aren't though a service of the library or widespread.

Do check that the ATM you are planning to use does not charge to give out cash. Those at supermarkets generally don't - and are clearly labelled as "Free" - but many others in convenient locations often do. It's generally a fixed charge of about £1.50 (I think) per withdrawal which gets quite steep if you make small withdrawals.

Just adding that many post offices also have fee-free cash machines so could be another good option. In our neighbourhood all the banks have gradually closed and now the only cash machines left are the ones at Sainsbury's and the post office.
