The Moco Art Museum in London has been open for less than a year. A friend and I will be in London in May and I'm trying to decide whether it's worth our time. If you have visited the museum, I'd appreciate hearing what you thought of it.
I haven’t been to the London one, but I’ve been to the one in Amsterdam. Honestly, I did not enjoy it. It felt very “designed to be instagrammed” and it was accordingly rammed with influencers with their phones out. I am a fan of modern and contemporary art, but found the works on display to be underwhelming, mainly lesser works by big names. We were in and out in half an hour having seen everything, which does not seem worth the ticket price to me. So, I’d go somewhere else if I were you. But, I appreciate I haven’t been to the London one and I do see it has good reviews, so maybe I’m wrong about it!
For modern and contemporary art in London, the Tate Modern has a world class collection and incredible special exhibitions, is free to enter (special exhibitions require a paid ticket), and is in an architecturally interesting building. The Hayward Gallery on the South Bank, the Saatchi Gallery, and the Royal Academy all put on interesting and thoughtfully curated exhibitions, often involving modern and contemporary art.
It isn't my thing.... Have you looked at reviews on Trip Advisor whiuch include a lot of photos.
Margaret, Thanks for the suggestions. I will look them up and see what exhibits are showing at those museums. I don't have a lot of time in London: 5 nights at the beginning (while likely jet-lagged) and 6 nights at the end.
I looked at the reviews on TripAdvisor and, for the most part, they were very positive. I'm a 73 year old woman, so appealing to kids and families is not a selling point for me. I guess I'm an old fogey. If someone has visited Moco in London, I'm interested in an description of what "digital and immersive" art means in relation to Moco.
I have been to this museum and I would say it is probably the worst museum in London (and I have been to pretty much all of them). This is definitely a place that was designed for Instagram. There is some good art here but also a lot of bad art (including NFTs, which is what they mean by "digital art"). The descriptions were also quite poor. As others have said above, there are way better places for modern art in London, particularly the Tate Modern. I would also add the Barbican to the list above.
Thanks, Cat. This information is very helpful. I was suspicious of the overwhelmingly positive reviews on TripAdvisor. It may be a generational thing. I've been to many art museums in London on previous trips so I was looking for something different. But I certainly don't want to waste my time. Thanks again.
