Last April my wife and I were in Spain when she had a cardiac episode. Our Medigap policy covered 20% of a $12,000 bill. We think that travel medical insurance is wise. I am surprised by the rather low limits on typical policies like those from Allianz. Geoblue has higher limits, but does not cover some of the travel-related items-it is very focused on medical and evacuation. Thoughts? Sugggestions? Experience?
I am not sure I understand what you are concerned about? I generally see plans paying around $5,000 for trip interruption which I assume is "travel-related items" not sure why I would need more.
I use insuremytrip.com to look at options when I am booking for one trip.
You can usually up the medical limits on these. I do that as I know the base plans are so low that it would not cover much. We go through USAA, which partners with Travel Insured International and wee opt for the Worldwide Trip Protector Plus. This plan has all sorts of coverages, not just medical and evacuation. You really need to read through each policy to see what is covered. I know, it isn't easy or fun.
I always purchase medical coverage and medical evacuation insurance for up to $100,000 coverage from American Express when we go overseas.
I do this even though my Blue/Cross/Shield provides coverage, but in many foreign hospitals, etc. you have to pay up front and my insurance reimbursement may take weeks.
