I'll be in Durham/York area of England for the May Day weekend this year (2015). Anyone know of any celebrations in the area? Are "attractions" likely to be open? I'm travelling by train - I assume the Monday will have a Sunday schedule, right?

In most of Europe 1st May is a public holiday. In Britain the first Monday in May is a 'Bank Holiday', this year that is Monday 4th May 2015.
Monday 4th May, as all Bank Holidays, will have a Sunday timetable for train and buses, EXCEPT, the railways usually do track maintenance work on Sundays and Bank Holidays, in theory when fewer people are travelling. If you are planning to travel on a Sunday or a Bank Holiday, it is always worth double-checking a few weeks in advance that your desired train is not cancelled, diverted or re-timed.
