Masterpiece Riches on PBS

Tonight, one after another.

First, a new season of Call The Midwife followed by The Forsytes on Masterpiece followed by The Count of Monte Cristo on Masterpiece.

Wow! How good is that.

Not sure how well the Forsytes will stand up to the (old) Forsyte Saga. Amazing how Jo Forsyte didn't age a day in 10 years, and in all that time never learned how to use a brush or comb. The never ending back biting, not to mention back stabbing becomes more annoying than entertaining. Hopefully future episodes will be better.

I watched the first episode of the Count of Monte Cristo on Passport. The script, the acting...er, to me it had a 4th grade vibe to the script. Wooden, simple, just no depth to the dialogue. Then I read The Guardian's review and was glad to know it wasn't just me who felt that way. Some viewers may enjoy it; we all like different things.

8:42pm PST.

Awaiting another episode of Dark Winds on AMC at 9pm.

Throughly appreciated their subtle tribute to Executive Producer Robert Redford on last weeks episode.

Show is set in the 70’s. Scene showed the actors walking down an urban street. Across the road on the marquee of the movie theatre; Jeremiah Johnson.

This afternoon enjoyed watching repeats of Grantchester with Reverend Will Davenport on PBS. Simple pleasure.

Found the Forsytes a little slow and dry but l will continue to watch. Feel like it has potential.

I really liked The Count of Monte Cristo but story was familiar. Feel like I have seen something in the past.

Watched The Forsytes and Call the Midwife.

After watching the Forsytes Saga, with Damien Lewis as the redheaded Soames and Gina McKee as the brunette Irene years ago, I found it hard to reconcile who was who with the other characters. I recall the names, just not how they fit into the family.

If I decide to watch this one, I'll need to "forget" the other and start afresh.

According to Google AI, there have been over 40 movies, TV movies, mini series and other adaptations of the novel. It would be surprising if you hadn't seen at least one of them before. A few of them were even less nuanced than this one appears to be.

I found the Forsytes a little slow moving but it has potential, so I believe.

Must have seen another version of The Count of Monte Cristo but can not recall which one.

Why is it being made and remade so many times over and over again?

Going to say a lot of liberties were taken the The Count of Monte Cristo. If anyone say the new Withering Heights movie, it’s along those lines. Some additions are fine but I find lately way too much modern ideas are inserted into a story. Old enough to remember when the BBC were accused of sexing up P&P by having Colin Firth bathe have naked. That seems quaint now. I wanted to like TCoMC but I guess I’m just getting old.

Why is it being made and remade so many times over and over again?

Because it's a classic? Because it's old enough to be public domain? Because a star or powerful director gets an itch to put their own stamp on something popular? Look at all the versions (remakes or adaptations) of A Christmas Carol., Little Women, Pride and Prejudice, Dracula, Sherlock Holmes, etc, etc, etc.
