Markets and Charity shops in Yorkshire - May

I'm seeking recommendations of Yorkshire towns with good markets and/or charity shops. I'm primarily interested in markets with more than food--vintage, decor & housewares, textiles, ephemera, etc. I love finding old prints and maps of a location, particularly if any ancestral connection.

We will be in the area for about a week in early May. We expect to be spending some of those nights on a Farm in Northallerton--so between North Moors and Dales. We have no problems rising early and driving 1-1.5hrs a day out from our base, maybe further for something special.

I have made a list of several towns and their market days, but a new travel book I got lists the market days as "first Thursday, second and fourth Saturday," etc. And some town websites do not appear to be updated.

Thanks,
Cheryl

Helmsley has a Friday (edited for correct day) market that sounds like what you were looking for. According to the site below, it offers household goods, gifts, food, items, clothing, and there is a separate area for artisan crafts. I have it in my itinerary and plan to stop by while I’m there. https://www.yorkshire.com/inspiration/days-out/helmsley-market/

Also, you might want to check https://www.visityorkshire.co.uk/ or some of the other Yorkshire tourism sites. They tend to have updated information about things like that.

Thanks, Mardee. I've looked at a few of the sites listing markets, but I wondered if any forum members had particular recommendations. I'll be eager to hear about your visit.

When I go to the Helmsley page, I read that the market is on Friday. Perhaps I'm missing a note about a special market on Mondays. ??

Oops, no, you're right - it's Friday. I even have it in Wanderlog on Friday so I'm not sure why I wrote Monday!

Skipton Market may be up your Street on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

It is so well known in the area that Bus Tours run there. Apart from the market, which really is a pretty good one (and watch out for the Cheese stall if he's there) there are some quirky little permanent shops in the side streets- Craven Court is especially interesting.

I've just checked the drive time, as I wouldn't normally put Northallerton and Skipton in the same sentence. It gives me 1:24 both for the 59 mile journey via Knaresborough or the 49 mile journey via Grassington.

You've also got Skipton Castle, the Craven Museum and the canal boat trips on the Leeds Liverpool Canal in the centre of the town, and a couple of very good pie shops. You might even get an afternoon tea boat trip if lucky.

There is Bolton Abbey and the Strid on the way, and a steam train to link Embsay (Skipton) and Bolton Abbey.

There is clearly more there than you can do in a day.

It's years since I've been to Hawes on Tuesday market day, but my memory is that it's the good produce market outside in the street and the bric a brac (if you want to use that possibly pejorative collective word) in the Market Hall. And on certain Tuesdays there is a big animal auction mart on the edge of town. Hopefully @ianand julie will correct me if my memory of Hawes market is wrong.

LOL, Stuart, I first had 'bric-a-brac' in my post.

Thanks for the info about Skipton---I did not have it on my list, probably because of the distance, but maybe... Also, we have noticed those tea canal trips. Yes, so much to do, everywhere! Would love at least a month! I'm guessing it would be pretty tight to get to Hawes market if we only arrive in Yorkshire that morning.

I'll turn my boot sales radar on, for sure, Richard, thanks for the reminder to look.

Charity shops are all over. If you know where you’re going you can search on charity shop in X town. All sorts of organizations operate them.

Hopefully @ianandjulie will correct me if my memory of Hawes market is wrong.

I haven’t been to Hawes for quite a while, but will be returning next month for a couple of days, so I’ll keep the mincers peeled for any relevant info!

Thanks for posting this question CanAmCherie. I was wondering about the various markets, too, as we’re hoping to go to one of these next spring. The Skipton link Stuart provided is great. That is the one whose days would fit into our time there. Can’t wait to hear about where you go and what you find! Hope you have so much fun!

Looking at the Market House Calendar it looks as if the Indoor Market at Hawes is every Tuesday from Easter to the end of October.

The Chippie (the Fish and Chip shop) just outside the Market House has always been a crackingly good one. I've never tried it but a local item on their menu is deep fried Wensleydale Cheese!

Mardee - too early, not by much, but enough!

Stuart - only staying the weekend, so Tuesday’s a no-go too.

Still, will have a look round if there’s time, given that we’re are likely to be taking in the delights of Great Shunner Fell!
