Maps!

Do you have a favorite map of London? There are so many to choose from. I found The London Mapguide (8th Ed.) the other day in a bookstore and it looks great. Not too small/hard to read, not too big and unwieldy.

Can anyone post a screenshot of a typical A to Z page? I think I used to have the mini one years ago but I'm not sure and it is long gone. Thanks!

I found several of the maps in my local bookstore to be hard to read, even with my reading glasses on. Some were overwhelming, too.

I would start with some of the maps from "Transport for London". Very good for basic orientation and pre-trip planning (and for transport!), and free, apart from the cost of printing them out. Most are available as free leaflets when you get to London.
Start here: https://tfl.gov.uk/maps
First the one-and-only tube map: https://tfl.gov.uk/cdn/static/cms/documents/standard-tube-map.pdf
The London visitor Guide (not a map, but lots of useful info): https://tfl.gov.uk/cdn/static/cms/documents/london-visitor-guide.pdf
And the bus map, which shows all main roads: https://tfl.gov.uk/cdn/static/cms/documents/bus-route-maps/central-london-bus-map.pdf

I cannot post a screenshot, but here it is on Amazon. The maps on the pages inside are about the same size as the one on the cover:
http://www.amazon.com/London-Street-Mini-Atlas-Atlases/dp/1843489058/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1441840263&sr=1-2&keywords=London+A-Z+map+book
Some of the listings on Amazon have a "scroll through the pages" feature, so you can flip through with your cursor, but this one won't do it. But this is what the book looks like. Each page is close-in of a certain neighborhood. I find a regular map much easier for seeing where I am in London in relation to the whole city at a glance.

If you bought the Rick Steves London guide book, it comes with a map. So do all the other brands of guidebooks. Browse at your bookstore and maybe buy a guidebook. I recommend the RS Pocket London.

The one you originally mentioned in your post, the London Mapguide, is alright, too.

Thank you so much!
It is true that when I was in London, I never really had any idea where I was in relation to the entire city. LOL

For Central London, The Streetwise Map mentioned by Rebecca was all we needed-street index on the back, easy to carry, doubles as a place mat for the picnic.

I like Benson's London Visitors' Map, which you can order online. Very detailed for sightseeing, includes a street index and lists of major hotels, theaters, stations, and shopping areas, plus an inset for Greenwich, a schematic tube map, and a bus map to help you use that excellent way of sightseeing. Folds to hip-pocket size. The streetwise maps are good because of lamination but I like this one better for London.

We've been using the same Streetwise London map for more than 10 years. It's very durable and portable. The last two trips (2013 and 2015) we've also used the CityMaps2Go iPhone app - you can download the maps to your phone and use them offline when you don't want to or can't use your data plan and Google or Apple maps. I find using the app easier for me than the physical map but we carry the physical map as a backup. The Streetwise maps are laminated and can stand up to a lot of rain and other abuse, like being jammed in a pocket, sat on, etc.

I love A to Z. I seem to buy a new one each time I visit as there is always someone to pass it on to. Given that, I do start with Streetwise as they are a good overview and are very sturdy.

I'm hoping the TFL still prints them but on previous trips I've found maps of the neighborhood surrounding the tube station I've ridden to. Usually over by the manned ticket counter. Very helpful for exploring what's nearby.

Streetwise Maps (Streetwisemaps.com) are about the best you can get. Detailed with every street on the waterproof folding map!
