Making phone calls using an e-sim phone

I must be a complete incompetent, since 95% of the calls I'm trying to make are not going through. My e- sim number starts with 1-940...

Do I need to be dialing either or both 44 +11 (for US country code) + the 0? I've tried everything - nothing works. Now I can't even call the dentist - which is doubly frustrating

Thank you!

Are you saying you are in the UK and want to call the US? If so, it doesn't matter what you number is. The US country code is 1, not 11. To reach a US number from a mobile, dial +1 and then the number. 44 is the UK code - you only use thay if you're calling the UK from another country.

And just to be sure, you have activated voice roaming, right?

+44 and drop the leading 0 for UK numbers.

Your eSIM is a US number. You're dialling from the US essentially even though you're in England.

Simon, I’m in the UK using my e-sim phone, trying to call a UK number

Thanks !

Gerry, I know - and I’ve tried that, but the calls just end

So for instance, if the Tunbridge Wells phone # is 01892 (the code) and then 6 digit number, I would dial 44 and the number without the 0

It’s not working

Thank you!

Hmmm... That should be how you're dialling UK numbers from that eSIM. That's definitely a US number you've got, not a UK one. Are you putting the + at the start?

Are you sure you have an eSIM that offers calls as well as data? I got caught out recently with an Airalo eSIM that only did data and I didn’t realise that when I bought it.

Gerry,

I figured it out!

I need to use my other phone (with regular sim) and dial as if I’m calling from US - so using the 011 and 44

Thank you SO So much!

Amanda, now that you mention it, probably not…but I have another phone with my normal sim, global plan, that I can use if I need to. I’ll be charged by XFinity for the $10 a day, but I don’t care - it’s worth it, and it’s not like I make calls all the time

Thanks!!

I'm just going back to your original question - Have you activated Data Roaming? Here's a note I've just made for when I switch to my Swedish eSIM after landing in Europe -

How to turn off & on data roaming on an iphone -
Go into “Cellular”
Look under individual telephone number.
Look at drop down box
Data Roaming is 3rd from bottom.

Great you have a second phone as a back up plan!

Instead of dialing ”011” before the 44, you can just dial ”+44”. The plus sign is a substitute for the international access code (011) used when dialing from a U.S. phone. ”011” was what was used from a U.S. landline to get an international line. With mobile phones, it is much easier to just always use the ”+”.

The key question was "Is your Esim data only?" If so, no worries you can still make calls using that phone if you call through "What's App" or "Facebook."

Sandancisco - yes, Data Roaming is on!

Yea, I’m lucky! At home, my older phone (which is paid off) is just got internet ….this is the phone il using in general in the UK. My newer phone is being used as the back up - and thank god I have it!

Thanks!

Laura, I didn’t know that - thanks!

But it didn’t work - the + sign is a 0 on my keypad, and I don’t know how to get it to be the +. It’s no big deal for me to dial 011

Thanks!

Carol, I don’t know offhand, but I do use What’s App - but only to home. I need “regular” phone to call for taxis, and in cases like today, where I needed to call a dentist

Thanks!
