Major Rail Engineering Works in England at Christmas and New Year

Apart from the previously advised London Paddington closures there will be the following major work-

London Liverpool Street (main line)- total closure 25 December to 2 January. All services (including) Stansted Express will start/terminate at Stratford. London Overground will use London Fields station as it's terminus.
In many cases Tottenham Hale or Seven Sisters on the Victoria Line will be the best tube interchange.

Cambridge- 24 December to 6 January- no trains at all from the London direction due to construction of Cambridge South. Rail replacement buses from Royston and Audley End

All Avanti West Coast and London North Western services (except to Birmingham) 25 December to 3 January disrupted or retimed due to major work at Crewe with no direct Liverpool trains and fewer Manchester trains. On 27 December no trains at all will run through Crewe (diverted via Manchester).

London St Pancras 21 to 29 December closed entirely for East Midlands and Thameslink trains. No service south of Bedford and Harpenden respectively. Bus replacements to outer London Underground stations and the East Coast Main Line.

in addition to those dates which bracket Christmas day in some cases, there won't be trains at all on Christmas Day and Boxing Day - they will be like hens' teeth

Trains do run in some areas on Boxing Day. Details will become available in due course. Merseyrail (Liverpool) ran a good service last year, Northern ran a limited number of routes in the Manchester and Liverpool area (for the first time) last year, Gatwick Express and Southern ran services down to the South Coast. The Stansted Express normally runs as do East Midlands Trains to Luton Airport.
Some services also run in the Central Belt in Scotland, notably in the Strathclyde (Glasgow) area.
London Overground also run on Boxing Day, at least on some routes- which means (TBC) there should be trains to Watford Junction.

And for anyone travelling to or from Manchester Airport, while no trains will run on Christmas Day there has always been a half hourly 24 hour bus service even on Christmas Day from central Manchester.
Edinburgh Airport also gets a 24 hour Christmas Day bus service- or always has had.
